I am rebarrelling a Ruger 77/44 to 357 x 44 Bain & Davis (18 inch) and was wondering what some of your idea's on the ideal twist would be? I plan on shooting 158 to 180 gr bullets, mostly Hornady 180 gr. XTP HP/Speer 170 gr Gold Dot Softpoints with maybe some 180 gr and 200 gr cast if it shoots cast well. I'm thinking maybe a 1-16 twist but am open to advice.

Call Hornady & Speer. They will tell you what twist is best for their bullets.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

Check out 35 Remington twist if you have not already. I think they are also 16" twists.

Good advice, I was planning on calling them tomorrow. Does the expected speed you are hoping to gain have a bearing on twist?

I hadn't thought that, thanks.

I fed just fine on the last one, and it fed fine from the mag into the 44 mag barrel on this one. It will be joining my Marlin 94 in 357 x 44 B&D. Both Hornady and Speer recommended the 1-14 twist.

I was thinking 1-16 would be the slowest i would want and 1-13 or 15 would be better. that will be a sweet rifle. good luck

Because my barrel was originally from a Stainless Ruger 350 REM MAG, the twist rate is a 1:12

Actually with the Ruger Barrel it looks like a factory issued rifle, we had to cut most of the old chamber out and turn about an inch of the barrel down to match the factory profile.

I find this is OK

It does prefer the heavy weight bullets. 125g Hornadys tend to spread a little.

I'm getting some very impressive speeds with the 158g Speers, and 25g of LIL'GUN Nearly on a par with similar weights in the 30-30 Win, its very efficient.

The only thing that worries me is the 2 piece bolt shooting itself sloppy, I will be keeping an eye on this.

Since these photos I've bedded the action to try and improve the accuracy, they are a damn nightmare to bed ..... especially the front of the action near the barrel .....wow

It shoots fine for a pistol round, but I'd still like it to shoot better, I think however the bolt and recoil lug being back infront of the trigger are it's real problem especially at the higher pressures.

regards
S&F
