.416 Rigby in Model 70
Is this a good option. Knowing there are better alternatives albeit more expensive. I have a gunsmith friend who says this is possible. Is it problematic? What are the problems with it? Any specific advantage to pre-64 vs. newer long actions. gduffey

The Rigby cartridge requires a larger diameter bolt IMO. Seek a custom magnum Mauser from one of the custom shops like Granite Mountain, Waffenfabrikhein, Satterlee and others.

The M 70 could likely be made to work the cartridge and It'd be strong enough but the bolt diameter should be larger.

There's not much barrel left between the chamber and the receiver threads on a 1" M70 Win. The Large ring 98 has more meat with the 1.1" Thread. The Rem M30/1917 Enfield is even better for the Rigby with a 1.125" X 10 Square thread. Min dia on the 1917 thread is around 1.085" making the large ring 98 look small in the meat departmant.

the rigby is too wide, in a staggered feed, to fit in a model 70, without alot of metal work.

can be done, but it's a hassle, and i don't suggest it

gduffey,

This was discsssed last year, see this link:

416 Rigby in Win Mod 70? How well does it work?.

Short answer is not well...buy a Ruger, that's what I did.
