I have a friend in South Africa that is looking for a replacement stock for a Bruno rifle. I thought it should have been BRNO but he indentified it as being a Bruno with the number 76 on the action. I have not been able to find much on the net about this rifle so I am hoping someone on here is familiar with it or could lead me in the right direction.

I thought the same thing as well but he said it was plainly stamped on the action BRUNO. I have come across a few links to this name and they have all been in the UK.

Jeffeosso, check this one out
http://www.wildcatrifles.co.uk/rifles.htm

I actually found someone that sells them. I sent them an email but have not heard back from them yet. I may give them a call tomorrow.

If nothing else I would like to find out if BRNO and Bruno ARE actually the same thing.

snipe, I probably have the least usable experience on the board, but "BRNO" and "BRUNO" are the same thing.

it's pronounced "BRUNO", but it's spelled "BRNO".

take it to the bank.

The thing that is throwing me off is I asked him twice if on the rifle it said BRNO and he said no it was BRUNO. Maybe it is an older rifle from the same plant and they went to an abbreviated name later?

Snipe,
it's not abbreviated.. the name of the place is BRNO, but like tincan said, it's said bruno (someplaces).. or brrrrr-no..

then again, the gent could have looked at it, his eyes read one thing, his mind SAW a word that it understood, and well.. it's brno..

ZB was known as Waffenfabrik Brunn for a period 60-odd years ago, but few if any sporting rifles were made during this period due to other production taking precedence Wink.

this is what the Germans called the gun works at "Brno" after they took possession of the country- there is another German spelling also, I think.

these would correspond to the "dot" and "dou" production codes on wartime 98's- IIRC.

I'm shootin' from the hip, here- verification needed.

There were actually a few different Waffenamt codes for the various factories under the Waffenfabrik Brunn (or Waffenwerke Brunn) umbrella. Seehttp://proofhouse.com/cm/ger_ord_codes.htm

As I said though (not realising my post needed explanation) it was only a temporary thing which occurred during that great unpleasantness which enveloped the world sixty-odd years ago, when quite a number of places had their names changed.

"Bru'no" is simply how the Afro-Euro hick prounounces "BRNO."

In Kentucky we say "Burr-no'" or "Bee-aRe-eNn-Oh" when we pronounce "BRNO." Wink

Bru'no, Burrno', tomahto, tomato.

That "custom rifle" is built on a Czech military Mauser 98 action taken off a WWII military 8X57mm made by CZ in BRNO-BRNO is actually a city! The guy who listed it put in the "U". The Czechs don't use many vowels-they pronounce them as if they were there, but don't WRITE them out!
