When sporterizing a mauser action what is the method for removing the charging rails (forgive me if I am calling them out wrong) from the top of the action. Do most of you guys do this ?
Why couldn't a guy use these with the clips and hunting loads? Novice question!

No reason I can if as long as you are using open sights.

Sorry forgot to answer the other question. I use a file and stone to cut the metal down until it is even.

As usual just my $.02

I remove it as I have no value in fast reloading in the field....the stripper clips just are not something I find valuable.....Also at times the lump gets in the way of scope base installation as I want to mount it as far foreward as I can for short body scopes.

Some folks leave this feature.....there isn't right and wrong here.

When I remove it I use a mill to remove most the metal and mill file the balance and them stone it and buff it.

BTW many folks refer to this as the charger lump

If you’re using open sights clip slots can be handy (in my opinion), but if you have a scope mounted conventionally they are covered by the scope and unusable.

You can remove the clip slot and the “hump†by grinding, milling or just filing/stoning them away. Obviously, the first two methods are more precise and result in a more concentric shape.

pegleg,
basically, if you aren't using a .473 casehead, AND reloading the entire mag, the charging humbs (stripper clip loading guide, if you lke) is worthless on a sporter... and if you want to single load, it has little value.

and, well, they are a little ugly in breaking up the lines of the mauser, from a sporter POV....

then again, if you aren't using a scope, the mauser bolt and safety work just fine, right LOL.

any decent smith can remove them, and if using some form of dividing head/rotary table/super spacer, recutting them to a symetrical form is child's play.
