Today I stopped at my gunsmiths and he has 5 VZ24s , no pitting on the recievers/bolts. There were no crests either and the guns looked to be reblued. Some have a 1938 stamped in the front ring. I already have one on the way but should I take one or all of these at $125 each? I have one I traded for that will be turned into a 9.3*62 already.

I only ask because looking a the gun list and shotgun news it appears there are less and less mausers showing up. Besides I like to support him when I can, he is after all the only home shop around for miles.

Thank You, John

I wouldn't buy the lot at that price, maybe for five for $500. I also would likely take one or two home if I had the change. The prices are only going to rise in the future.

Good clean un-molisted Mauser actions are getting more scarce every day. It amazes me they're still any left at all. One thing you should ask yourself is, Can I actually use these or I'm I just hording them away? You'll know what to do.

Has anyone tried these?vz24

I saw a BRNO go for $136 on gunbroker.com if that tells you anything.

I will say that $125 sounds a little high when buying in bulk though.

John,

If I were you I'd grap one of the rifles with 1938 on the ring.

Not all vz's had the lion on them, some only had the date of mfg. If its still there, they haven't been ground.

FYI, I recently paid $125 for a VZ-24 with the lion intact and no pitting to make a big bore. That price doesn't seem unreasonable considering their scarcity these days.

Regards,

Dan

VZ-24s are very good actions, but many of them and other Mausers have been ground to death and these sound like some of those ground ones..If they have pits, and the crest and markings are faded then I would shy away from them...You can still find good Mauser actions...In fact the latest gun list has some new, never issued rifles for about $250 as I recall....I bought a couple of 1909 a couple of months back for $90. apiece and they were cherry....

a 1938 and/or date code mauser would go home with me, as these are going to be higher quality than the later ones!!

125 is asking... bet you could have plnked down a benjamin and walked away with it, as they are/where 75 bucks for vz's from century.

I like the idea that you are trying to help support your local smith. Every deal doesn't have to be a situation where you squeeze every last penny out of him. I'd say pick the best one of the lot and pay him his price.

I've seen M-70s listed in gun list for $250...that makes paying more than $100 for a VZ24 difficult to justify!
There's better actions for the money than the mauser.....

I bought a dozen VZ24s for re barrelling when BIG5 had them on sale for $76 out the door 5 years ago.

One of them, now with a Lothar Walther barrel, I would not sell for $1,000.

If you are making jewelry, maybe you fancy a Rem 700 or Win 70, but for getting a good gun, they are cheap junk compared to a VZ24 per my functional values.

I don't buy or make jewelry for myself.

I "want" the VZ action and now have 2 of them. I am a collector/hoarder of many things and mauser actions are new to the list.

I am converting the shooting left handed but after looking at so many nice sporterized mausers I decided I needed some. One is on the way to becoming a 9.3 x 62 as for the rest only time will tell..

If someone offered me a M70 long or magnum CRF action for 250 I would take all they had and could make money or some very happy friends Cool

I didn't say CRF.....but I've seen several M-70 rifles in Gun list for $250.....if you insist on CRF for such things other than DG that's your privelege.....I'll take a push feed M-70 over a Mauser '98 for such things as .338 Mag and less anyday!
