Why does S&W put shrouded barrels their model 66 and 69 L-frame revolvers? Matt Matt Matt FISH!! Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984: "Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

My opinion? Profit. Easier to fit a two piece barrel so that the cylinder forcing cone gap is correct. Cheaper to manufacture. Also accuracy seems to be equal to, or better than a one piece. Look at the old Dan Wesson revolvers. They won many a match. Also people could interchange barrels themselves, but S&W doesn't give us that option. From what I have read, they can be a real hassle to get on and off unless you have the proper tools, which S&W won't sell. Personally, I like the old style S&W's and won't own one with the lock or MIM parts. By the way, how is the 416 coming along?
