Here are some pics of my two CZ stocks I just re-finished. When I first received the rifles they had a very nasty heavily tinted poly coat from the factory. The factory finish almost completely hid any figure that the stocks had. But enough showed through to make me want to see what was really hiding under the factory finish.

For both stocks I chemically stripped them. That was followed by minor reshaping of the stock to remove a lot of the "fat" area immediately behind the bottom of the pistol grip I also cleaned up the comb flutes to make them more defined. The wood was sanded to 400 grit and the grain was raised twice and sanded off. I applied 2 coats of a red tinted Danish oil and let that fully cure. The 452 stock was then finished with a home brew oil finish. The 527 was finished using Sea-Fin Teak Oil. Both stocks were wet sanded 4 times and took about 10 coats to get them where I wanted them.

I still need to refresh the checkering and clean up the so-so factory job. But that will have to wait until my skill level is a little better.

And both.

I apologize for the poor quality of the pics.I am definately not a photographer and my camera is not all that great. So the pics do not do nearly the justice that these stocks deserve.

The pics aren't showing for me.
I'm very curious though because I'm in the midst of refinishing my 452 stock and have been eyeing my 527 and 550 stocks.

I dont know why the pics are not showing up. When I open it half of them show up and if I hit refresh then they swap around which ones are coming up. It must be an Imagestation problem. Here is a link to the photo album at imagestation so you can see them better.

If you email them to me, I will post them.

My email address is in my profile.

I was able to see the earlier Imagestation pictures by looking at the properties and pasting that into my browser. The rifles look very nice.

Thank you for the compliments. I was very happy with the factory wood to say the least. I got very lucky on that deal!!

Now I have 3 more CZ's that need the same treatment ( 2 550 Safari's in 375 and 458 and a 550 American in 7x57) The 7x57 wood will rival the 223 wood I believe.

I owe a lot of thanks to Customstox and ForrestB for their help on how best to go about finishing these and what finishes to try.

That is some beautiful wood. Do you happen to have a before picture so we can see how much that normally muddy factory finished cleared up.

Bill,

Looks like your time in the family furniture shop really paid off!

These are beautiful and really makes you wonder what is under some of these factory finishes they slop on.

Don’t buy your little boy a wood burning set for his birthday though! Smiler

Rick,
NO WOOD BURNING ALLOWED!!! I am worried enought hat he will want to help with refreshing the checkering. Thats just fine except it will probably be while I am at work and he will want to get "artistic" with how and where he does it.

You could see globs of the dried finish CZ uses in the mag well area. It was a drak brown and nasty. I am getting anxious to do my 7x57 next. It shows about the same amount of figure as the 223 did before the refinish job.

Bill,

Don’t feel bad...my youngest, that you have met, when he was about 5 or 6 yrs old, watched me sharpening a knife with an Arkansas stone and putting 2 and 2 together decided that if my “stone†worked good that a big rock in the front yard ought to work even better since it was so much bigger! One day while I was at work he “sharpened†a couple of my knives and even a hand saw for me as a surprise! Smiler

Thanks for posting the before pic for me. You would have to break my legs to get this rifle back from me now.

Wow,

Hard to tell just how much their factory finish hides the grain until you see it first hand.

Thanks

Bill, they look fantastic.

BTW, lets just talk Forrest into bring his matched set to Idaho on our hunting trip. We can plan his demise and flip a coin to see who gets which rifle. Nice when a plan comes together.

I keep trying to talk Forrest into bringing along a sweet 6.5x55 full stock that he keeps teasing me with and then leaving him for coyote bait (coyotes would probably get food poisoning from eating him though) What we need to do iscut a deal with his wife where she gets the life insurance and we divide up his guns.
