I am trying to learn! So your answer will make not change anything. My first time to have a rifle rebarreled. It does shot well. How many times do you shoot a newly barreled rifle to check accuracy? It took 6 of my reloads to get the scope sighted in. 7 mag reloaded with H1000. Cleaned it to put it away and it was very carboned up. Never did get all the carbon in the freebore removed.

How critical is the crown or the last part of the barrel? It looks like they stuck a reamer in the end of the barrel and just reamed the rifling out!

Is this standard practice or a "what the H***"? The barrel job did not cost me a lot but does it say much for the manufacturer? I found a local guy who work reasonable. Having him rebarrel another rifle. If he does well I may spend the money and get the 7 mag converted to a 300PRC! Thoughts?

If that's the muzzle I'm looking at its screwed up royally. Needs a recrown by someone who
knows what their doing.

Try to look unimportant. Your enemy might be low on ammo.

This has got to be a joke or some kind of gag. NO gunsmith would do that to a muzzle, even a bad one.
If this is really what your crown looks like, DO NOT give that guy any more work.
To answer your question, your crown is the most important part of a barrel job, and a bullet can't leave the muzzle uniformly unless the crown is also, uniform. While shapes can vary.
You have a hot mess; it needs help.
If your 6 shots hit a basketball at 100 yards I would be amazed.
I also find that "local guys" are all hacks. Yours definitely is. Do not let him adjust your anvil; he will screw it up.

Last time I saw a muzzle that bad it was on a counter-bored VZ24...come to think of it, that VZ was way better than that. That barrel needs to be shortened and recrowned.

The WW2 VolksKarabiner 98 (VK98)has a counterbored muzzle because they welded on the front sight. Workmanship is 1000 times better than yours and the factory was staffed with "guest" workers and was being bombed daily. Run as fast as you can, from that "gunsmith".

That's the way I just got it back from Cooper! I noticed a bright ring at the edge of the hole. It seemed to be really carboned up. I pulled out my bore scope and looked. My old barrel was really fire cracked and loosing accuracy. Cooper will rebarrel an originally owned rifle for $200 plus shipping. They did not say "new" barrel. That's why I was asking these questions. Without try to develop a load or special scope it will do three shots under an inch at 100 yards! Their test card is a lot better than that but that's the problem I had with the original barrel. Never could get it to shoot as well as they said it would. Talking to the original owner was a bad experience!

Looks like someone spun that barrel with a live center in the muzzle. Or worse yet a plain center! That needs to be sent back at Cooper's expense for a re-do.

The bright area at the bore is concentric and raised. It did happen after the barrel was blued(or what ever finish they use). I would think a plain center might cause the raised wire edge. To cut the lands down it would make a heck of noise! I emailed them but am about finished with them.

The whole bore under the crown is like the photo. Not a bad photo! Thought maybe it was done on purpose.
The why escaped me. Looks too crude. I saw a guy put a hose clamp around a barrel for a square and cut it with a hack saw. A little file on the outside and bur knife in the bore and it repeatly shot under an inch! Did not make it professional though!

If this is a new barrel blank and left at full length as it came from the suppliers you must cut back about 1 1/2 inches to clear all of the tooling marks. The chamber reamer will take care of one end. Make a cast of the muzzle end and check for the correct diameter.

+1 -
you have to give it a trim off the tip --

this one is sort of weird, with the uneven "Wear" .. that the lands aren't equally damaged, like someone took a burr or cheap conic stone to it, as the "Scratches" go into the crown.. almost like it was "Crowned" with a burr/stone...

it's ugly, but you said it shoots????

Got an apology from Cooper. They want it back to correct the issue. Dawn suggested over zealous with the crown tool. She tells me that master smith Glen was moved to her department. Things should be better. Here is hoping it survives a second UPS round trip! I intended to take some different photos but was expecting an UPS package. Hastily boxed it up to swap incoming and out going!
