It looks like the "color case" was done with an oxy-acetalene torch.

The seller Ed1 (or Ed Lander on GA) is ruining SxS's as fast as people will buy them - which seems pretty fast. He's been doing this to older American doubles for over a year and now has starting torching cheaper Euro's. This and an AYA come to mind.

What this high heat in spots does to the hardening is beyond me (I don't think I can spell metallurigical) but I imagine that some areas get tempered, some get annealed, some get brittle...

Yikes.
