Anyone ever make an extended tang that connects to the butt plate? Thought that would look pretty sweet if done right. One piece job. Would give the scroller something fun to work with design wise. Something like this that connects to the action tang.

This would be bad ass too

I've seen wrist tangs, but none that went all the way back to the butt plate. It would make your cheek cold when you shouldered it.

Most metal furniture in or around the buttstock area evolved because it filled a specific need.

Holland's extended tang on heavy calibre double rifles.

In sportaing as against military arms, the "heel and toe" metal part plates in the picture were a hangover from muzzle loading days when the butt would rest on the floor for the rifle, or sht gun, to be re-loaded.

So it was there for the very practical reason of protecting the toe and heel of the butt from damage when the gun was held vertically with the butt plcaed on the ground for ramming the load.

So, in practice, weren't engraved as they'd pretty soon be coming into contact with the ground!

As a tang that links the back of the action to the buttplate served no practical purpose it never came into being.

Also in the days of rifles as well as shot guns being "bespoke" made to fit or custom stocked a one size fits all tang from back of the action to the buttplate wouldn't have been practical.

If Lord John wanted a 13 7/8" rifle stock and the Duke of XXX a 13 1/2" rifle stock it would have been impossible.

Don't forget that many of the metal parts were bought in by the gunmakers ready to fit and not made in house.

So whilst a neat idea it just wasn't needed or for guns that were made to fit the individual practical.

However the military equivalent was used. And that is the through stock bolt (such as on the Lee Enfield) that goes from the rear of the stock under the metal buttplate to screw directly into the rear of the receiver.

The idea was a mix of beauty and function. Adding strength to the wrist and beauty with the engraving while having some traditional look that was fully custom.
Was thinking for big bores and doubles and big bore single shots.

While an interesting and decorative idea, the first notion on the tip of my brain was, "How delicate would this extension be outside the stock?" I can not imagine a full length rib connecting the action as part of the butt plate. Whoohoo if it can be done practically.
Just a thought.

I agree with the fragile part. You'd never be able to get it back into the stock after removing the barrelled action for maintenance. I think it would have to be done with a couple of breaks. One behind the tang and one in front of the buttplate with the "over the comb" piece staying with and being a part of the stock.

I was thinking the design would be one piece with the butt plate being two pieces.
The extended tangs I have seen have been quite stout from action to grip cap and top tang to where the grip meets the main stock area. I was thinking about 1/4" thick but could taper to 3/16ths maybe towards the butt plate area.
The bottom part of te butt plate could be attached to the drop box area where carts ect are stored.
An interesting concept.
