I have aquired a Traditions single shot with their synthetic (plastic) stock. Rifle is like new except the stock has something going on. the stock is kind of sticky all over, butt stock and forearm. I suspect the previous owner must have coated the stock with something, perhaps gun oil that has made it sticky. Anyone seen this before ? And does anyone have any idea what I can remove the stickyness with ?

Acetone will usually remove most sticky stock finishes.

And dissolve plastic stocks depending on the plastic type. Try some alcohol on it and see if that helps. If not, some talc will help temporarily.

A little more on line looking and there is lots of this happening with plastic stocks. Browning has lots of issues. Didnt try acetone as several sites suggested it will melt some stocks. Tried alcohol and several other solvents. Non really worked effectively. The I tried a can of non chlorinated brake cleaner. dampen a lint free rag and rub. Way less effort than anything else I tried. Just dont forget to re oil all metal parts. Several sites suggested once you get the sticky crap off give the stock a few coats of spray laquer . Thanks for the help boys

Mine had a Dura Grip coating [rubber] on the stock. It was all tacky, after trying all kinds of solvents, Hoppes took it off the best, with a little elbow grease. Then wiped it down with alcohol.

Friend of mine had this problem on an SX4 and he used Methyl Hydrate to rub it out.

Same here I have, or had, one of those sticky stocked Browning X Bolts, the Duracoat was quite sticky when I bought the rifle second hand, used to bring half the hillside back home from a hunt.
Goof-Off graffiti remover got rid of the sticky coating using a poly pad, rounded end scraper and hot water to rub the stock down. I then sprayed and rubbed in some satin black poly paint. Looks perfect and feels nice to handle.
