This was receiver earlier this day in an E-mail from NSSF:
quote:
A limited number of recently delivered Sako and Tikka stainless steel rifles have been recalled due to a problem discovered in the steel used in the barrels. The lowest serial number affected by this recall is 419140 and the highest serial number affected is 461951; however, only a small percentage of rifles within this range of numbers is being recalled. In addition, no rifle shipped before February 2004 is involved in the recall. Because only a limited number of recently shipped rifles are involved in the recall, customers being asked to return their rifle are being contacted directly. Although the recall is nearly complete (99% of rifles affected by the recall in the U.S. have already been returned or are in the process of being returned), if you have a stainless steel Sako or Tikka rifle within the serial number range listed above, received by you after February 28, 2004, and you want to check and determine whether it is being recalled, please call 1-800-503-8869. If you have received a written or telephonic recall notice, please follow the instructions for returning the recalled product contained in that notice.

Does anyone other than me find it strange that Sako admits they have not found all the rifles in American and then explains they did not find it necessary to issue a public recall? What is the acceptable percentage? 10% 20%? What an absolute joke of a company.

Has anyone heard of a Sako/Tikka blow occur for a rifle outside the recall serial numbers? If not this would tend to indicate that Sako has isolated the problem whatever it was.

Is it only certain calibres, certain types of barrel eg fluted, certain models eg lightweights that are being recalled?

If only 'hot' calibres are being recalled or only lightweght barrels, are they taking a chance on small calibres in heavy barrels being OK?

Had a letter from the UK importer to say that only 21 guns sold in the UK were affected.

Yep! I especially like this part of the article:
quote:
When the problems arose, Sako immediately discontinued production and deliveries of the models, and began to recall them from retailers, and contacted individual buyers.
However, the company did not make any public statements at the time. "We did not consider that necessary, because we were able to reach all owners of the weapons in other ways", he said.

This is really shows a company's true worth. Makes me glad I sold off all but one of my Berettas. And that one might go too.

What was interesting was that it was my impression that they at Beretta USA had full knowledge af the internet chatter going on about their product.

You have to listen to all sorts from shopkeepers. I was told today that it was only .243s that were blowing up!

My .223 Tikka rifle is due in next week, so I have been told.
I've bought 100 rounds of 55grn Federal BT in anticipation.

Maybe. I think the boffins call it a safety margin. A tailfin fell off an airliner a while
ago because "they" didn't think "such and such"
would (probably) happen; but it did.

This is the reply I got from the UK importers.

"Hello,
WE have experienced some delays with deliveries but no more than we would normally see after the Xmas break. We anticipate clearing all of our orders by the middle to the end of March.
The problem that you refer to was as a result of a batch of steel supplied to Sako. As soon as this became known to them they recalled all rifles made from this batch. This affected 21 rifles in the whole of the UK which we immediately traced and replaced as a precaution. There is no possibility that Sako would take "chances" with smaller calibres, in fact we were impressed with the speed with which they acted when this problem became apparent. It showed their total commitment to quality.
Best regards"

Check the money trail. When we [in the USA] buy a car ,20% of the price goes to liability insurance .That's common , I think guns are a higher percentage. It's probably cheaper for them to absorb a few injury lawsuits than to have a large recall. That certainly doesn't say much for ethics and I wonder how many sales the lost because of this or is that included in their calculations too !
