Jeffe, If the grain runs with the watermarks, which is usually the case, then the direction of flow is 90 dgrees to the centerline of the bore. It would work for a thru bolt gun where the bolt provides tension in the wood.

The seller is central IL. We grow a lot of corn around here because we have very rich soil and good rainfall. Unfortunatly, those conditions do not make for good gunstocks. John

gasgunner, you know that most of Winchesters' stocks came from Iowa and Missouri in the late 19th and early 20th century. They may not be much to look at, but a heck of a lot of them are still going strong. Brent When there is lead in the air, there is hope in my heart -- MWH ~1996

The seller is from Central IL, when you cross the Mississippi growing conditions change a lot. Only a hundred miles, but the soil is much rockier. I ride dirt bikes near where Fajen was located, and believe me, I'd much rather land on IL gumbo than the rocky ground down there. But you are right, a perfectly functional gunstock can come from IL walnut, but it is going to have very large pores to fill, and you better plan on nothing finer than 20 LPI checkering. And I certainly wouldn't pay more than about $50 for a blank of it. John

Chic, I was thinking the same thing, the grain is running perpendicular! The pictures aren't very good, but other then for knife scales and pistol grips, it's useless. __________________________________________________ The AR series of rounds, ridding the world of 7mm rem mags, one gun at a time.

Paul, I wouldn't put a 458 anything in it... but it would make a GOREOUS 280/270/308 etc...crosbolt and a hidden wrist pin... would be nice.. if it was 50 bucks, i'd buy it... and retock jana's 708 with it jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? Paul, the through bolt on a rifle like a Ruger #1 will cure the ills of any poor grain stucture. It puts the wood in tension and will give those blanks like that a useful purpose. That is one of the reasons for the large washer shoulder area under the bolt in the butt stock.

I'd still be concerned that it would break in the wrist. I'd prefer to start with a decent blank, then put repairs into a marginal one. I do admit it would be tempting for $50, but I'd probably pass. You put the same labor into a stock whether it's $50 wood or $500 wood, so you might as well start with something that will make a good stock. __________________________________________________ The AR series of rounds, ridding the world of 7mm rem mags, one gun at a time.

I ran across that blank on ebay last night, its pretty, but it's one of those you might like to hold in your hands before you bought it. Billy, High in the shoulder (we band of bubbas)

Personally, I would not even use the ebay blank as a 2 piece stock. There are often pieces of wood just like being peddled as a "stock blank". The dimensions may be there, but the lay out isn't

That stock is best used for pistol grips or furniture IMO...To start with Black Walnut in most cases is not my wood of choice and for one or two piece stocks I still want a quarter sawn piece of wood that is properly laid out for a gun stock...and that one is cut in the wrong direction IMO....
