left hand cheekpiece

Because of a macular hole in my right eye I've had to switch to my left for shooting. A problem is that shooting left-handed there is little or no contact with my face on the stock. Most of my stocks have a cheekpiece on the left side for right-handed shooting. On a recent antelope hunt I improvised with duct tape and a piece of foam but it was ugly as sin.

A solution might be a leather strap-on cheekpiece that I could move from rifle to rifle. Do any of you people know of a quality leatherworker who could come up with something appropriate? I have made most of my stocks myself of good-looking wood and hate to clutter them up with duct tape.

Thanks, Frank. A little bulky but maybe I could trim it down.

You could make something yourself.

If looks are really important, get some similar-looking walnut and a shape-following tool, trace out and cut/gouge the combe shape and stick it on with double-sided tape - or glue if you want to keep it there.

I had a high scope on a sporterised Mauser 50 years ago and found parallax a problem. A buddy who retreaded tires for a living moulded some rubber over a pine dummy of the combe and I upholstered it with leather sewn on with a Myers(?) reeled awl. It worked a treat and never smacked me in the chops.

Damn, I must have been shooting all wrong over the last 6+ decades I have been hunting as a lefty using right handed rifles and shotguns all my life. I can pick up any rifle or shotgun and shoot with the best of them, not once have I used a left handed gun or any gun with a cheek piece on the righthand side of the stock.

Only LH gun I have now is a semi auto shotgun for more convenient operation when shooting from a laydown blind, my O/U gun is a bit hard to load when laying down.

Only RH rifles I can't use are those with the silly roll over comb which presents a sharp edge to a LH user e.g. the BSA CF2 rifle was one of the culprits.

Shape a new one using kydex, EVA foam, wood, epoxy, etc and cut off the old one using power sander or hand tools. If you have questions you could PM me or just get some local help. Good luck. It would be a fun little project.

OP might check out Bradley Cheek Rest. I have one for my military style rifles and like it. Mine is synthetic, but they make one in leather$$$.

I lost the use of my right eye LONG ago and decided to switch to left hand shooting for long guns. I have some long guns that can be shot either way and several that are LH.

Well, a solution, sort of, is at hand. A galfriend, who is a retired dermatologist, handed me a 4X6 adhesive bandage. With a foam pad under it will do fine, and at least it's not as ugly as duct tape!

When the rifle is retired for the season it can be removed easily.

Thanks for all the help.

That used to be the standard way to add combes and pistol 'hands' to sporterise military rifles. You would cut the top off, flat, and stick a bigger piece on there. Having flat pieces stuck together is certainly quicker and easier than laboriously tracing the curve as I suggested but may be harder to disguise, on the left side at least.

Adding the pistol knob generally involved angled cuts underneath, which probably compromised strength.

The best stuff for an easy and temporary solution is a sheet of sticky back EVA foam of the desired thickness cut to size. Get it on Amazon.com.
You can also cover the foam with one of those elastic slip on ammo holding butt stock "boots". Simple and does not look too bad.
