Why would you want to do that? If you reload, everything is available and it is a better cartridge.

The 222 Rem Mag is a longer cartridge so you'd have to set the barrel back. I'd recommend at least .500" to be sure you get rid of the 222M neck.

But, check around first. An original 721 in 222 Rem Mag may be worth more than you think.

And also, listen to Butch.

Wouldn't it be a 722 if were an original 222 Rem Mag? I don't remember any small face bolts for the 721.

If it is a 721, factory chambered with a small BF, and all original, it is worth way too much to alter in any way.

Right on.
721's were chambered in 270, 30-06 and 300 H&H Magnum.
Rem 722's were chambered in 222, 222 Mag, 244 (Thank you EddieSmiler)), 257 Roberts, 300 Savage (Thank you Alan GloreSmiler)), and 308 Win.
If there is a 721 with a small bolt face bolt in 222 Mag, I would think that it was a re-barrel job, not an original.

Can't answer your question, however, I have two Rem 722's in 222 Rem Mag, and the accuracy I'm getting is excellent. You might want to consider leaving it as is, and keep its intinsic value.

Whether it's a re-barrel or not it would be a shame to go to .223. The 222 mag is a far, far superior cartridge. What are your reasons for contemplating this change? Jim

If he doesn't reload, then the .223 would be a better round,as plenty of ammo at most any store, but i like the 222mag. better mostly because of the longer neck, hate that short neck on the .223,but i wouldn't change that 222 mag. if it were mine, but not a nickle worth of difference downrange between the two. Also the 722 was chambered in the 243.
