They offer end grain sealer in their ebay store? Does this mean it hasn't been sealed? Kind of cheesy IMO. Other than that I think it's a bit plain. Whether or not it's a value depends on what it goes for and what a person wants to use it for. Listed as a english and claro blank? I don't see a graft line but I'm no expert.

I think there's better blanks in the classifieds here

Jeffeoso and Ray atkinson both have better pieces of wood right here.

I have better blanks as well.....frankly I'd not buy that blank.

It will not need a long time to dry. A good fire will dry it right out, just before it ignites. It is a utility piece of wood. The listing says "English & Claro Walnut Gunstock Stock 1 Pc Blank Curly". I do not think the line is a graft, infact they say it is from their planer. A graft line is much more prounced and you can see it on all edges. It looks like plain English to me. In the orchards around Chico they used Claro root stock and grafted english walnut on top. What grew above ground was English. When you cut it and marketed the wood, it is still English and not a mix. Nonetheless, it is not worth the effort you will put into it.

BTW, just did a little browsing on Ebay. The following is a graft. The front is English, the back is claro. The title of the auction says it is English, the description says it is claro. These guys are clueless.

claro/english graft 2 piece

I just don't like the idea of buying "green" wood. I could see it if I was getting an exceptional piece of wood for a bargin basement price, but unless the grain has my name written in it, I'd just as soon let somebody else stare at it for the next 3-5 yrs.

Besides not having much contrast or figure, it is full of knot holes. Piece of crap IMO. The cost of the blank is a small part of the total cost of having a nice stock made, why not pay just a little more for one that is decent?

For $26.00 its a steal...

Its English wood and does have a bit of color and grain..Would make a nice utility stock or for a hunter. It appears to be laid out well enough....Wood does not have to be fancy to make a nice rifle, craftsmanship can make a plebian stock look pretty good...but I would let it hang for a year or two....

Yes, I have some much nicer wood but not for under a $250.

The biggest problem I have regardless of price is the knot holes up and down that blank. For cheap utility grade Juglans regia (Turkish), go to http://www.hunterbid.com (Chiron). They also have nice stuff if you pay a little more.

I bought more than 50 blanks last 4 years from Chiron or Hunterbid.com. I visited them in New Hampshire for my last purchase. These guys have very large inventory. Over 3000 sets of high grade rifle blanks. They let me pick my 20 blanks out of 300 sets. Very happy with my trip. The best hospitality.
