I have a couple of rifles that unfortunately have Limbsaver recoil pads on them. I had to literally rip them out of the safe and was left with a tar mess on the carpet at the bottom of the safe. I know you can send them back and they will replace them but is it possible to cure the rubber to keep this from happening. I really don't care to replace the three pads that are gooey.

I worked in th polymer "rubber" industry for some 30 years. As far as I know there is no way to solve this problem short of replacing the pads. The polymer used to make the original pads has decomposed probably due to lack of anti-oxidant / whatever, hard to tell without testing. Lack of anti-oxidant would allow ozone to attack the polymer. Read somewhere a while ago that Limbsaver was "replacing" these pads due to a problem with the compound. Contact them and see what happens. FWIW --- John 303.

I've never had this problem -- and i use them, alot ...,.but watch, 5 will melt in the next week on me

so, it leads me to wonder what I am doing differently than some other people

I don't wipe them down with ANY oil before or after grinding

I don't get any solvents never them, that is to say, no gun cleaning solvents

i am NOT (usually) careful about getting stock finish on them. - sometimes the finish just gets on them

I don't torch or otherwise try to finish them up nicer ..

I hate Limbsaver pads for that very reason. Something breaks down in them and they adhere to what they are in contact with. Then you have to pull them up and they ruin the area where they were sitting. They may be great pads from a recoil absorption perspective, but this annoying problem makes me stay away from the Limbsavers. No issues at all with Decelerators.

ozone can degrade rubber, I have been in homes that have ozone machines running all the time and producing IMO an unhealthy amount of ozne, are you guys doing this??

in times when one needs a rifle, he tends to need it very badly.....PHC

No ozone machine here. I didn't even know there was such a thing. I have 100 plus rifles and these are the only three having the problem.

I have one rifle with a limbsaver pad and have experienced the same problem, but on others with similar pad it has not happenend. That gooey crap is awesome thumbdown. It sticks to the carpet in the safe, the inside of guncases and even my shirt. I just assumed it was due to something I got on it(solvent?) or storing it in the closet before I had a safe. Sorry to hear others have had the same problem but I am glad it wasn't just me. I will shoot limbsaver/sims a message and we'll see what they will do. (hopefully replace it with a non gooey version). If I hear back from them I will keep you posted. JJ
