I just got back from a 4 day round trip to southern ID to cut a 6 ft. black walnut. Huge tree, lots of work. The first load went 12,000# and looks to have nice color, not sure about figure as we start the lateral cutting tomorrow. Thought I'd post a couple of quick pics just for fun:

The tree was nearly dead and had dried significantly making the wood much lighter to deal with, I'll post pics of the butchery as it progresses if anyone is interested.

Jay, you are a glutton for punishment. I am sure it will pay off for you. The has to be some great feathered crotch in that one section. Good luck.

No amount of creativity or coersion would convince the owner to allow us to excavate the stump. It got ground and will give me night sweats for a long time. The tree was near Boise and was free, sort of. We had to entirely remove it and clean up which meant bringing in a tree service with a chipper and trucks. We also rented a man-lift. Black walnut goes for $4.80 a bf around here so we figured even if we don't get that many spectacular blanks, we can recoup the money invested just in lumber from the plain wood. And its fun.
