I have had dreams of a 300 H&H for awhile now. I purchased a Chuck Daly action and a Wind River octagon barrel. I bought some bottom metal from Jeffeoso and had him modify the length. I took all of this to my local smith to put together. He didn't. After a year all he had gotten to was putting the barrel in the lathe and turning it half round. In doing this he left the transition area very rough. I gave up. I tried to sell the basket case here but had no takers. I was getting ready to part the mess out when in conversation with Vapodog he mentioned that he could solve my problems by putting it in one piece. Here is what came to my house today. New Dakota bolt handle and Timney trigger. Nice crown. This is an older Williams sight and I need to get a hood without rust. Cleaned up the transition NICELY! Here is the best part. I was originally thinking a quarter rib but we decided on this NECG sight instead. Forrest milled the bottom to match the octagon. This turned out much better than I could have imagined. Very tight fit. NO gaps. The other side. No Chuck! I know these pictures were posted already but I wanted to say thanks to Forrest for an unbelievable job! He is a first rate guy! Thanks! Wes

Malm, I'm curious.....what are you referring to?...the Barrel?...it's a typical round to octagon to round barrel......if such a thing is typical! There does appear to be some lightwaves that look as though it's badly distorted near the receiver but it's actually not at all. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Malm, barrels in Nebraska are all curved upward for the really long shots. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

Yup, that barrel looks like it is curved upwards. I look at it on my flat screen and it still looks curved.

That’s what I was wondering also. Probably just the angle of the picture but the barrel looks a bit “saggy†in the middle.

now that you mention it, it sure does look that way. Hey Wes.....what's your opinion.....does it look bent in person? /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Looks like a little fisheye in the camera lens is all. The opinion of 10,000 men is of no value if none of them know anything about the subject. - Marcus Aurelius -

Wes Now you have done it. Vapo is a big guy already and now you have really swelled him up. A common guy won't be able to even talk to him anymore!

It's obviously the photo. Probably not a straight on shot but taken from angle to get the whole thing in the shot and still be reasonably close. ______________________ Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else.

If you heat that barrel up red hot on the bottom side it might draw that curve out of it as it cools. The only easy day is yesterday!

\22WRF....well not exactly. I consider myself a fairly good judge of artistry/quality when it comes to the firearms business. Make no mistake about it this includes my own and there's no way I'm as good (nor I suspect ever will be)as many of the works that have been posted on this forum. I've been a fancier of firearms since I was 10 years old and over the years two people have shown me such incredible work and craftsmanship that I have aspired to their standards....(prior to discovering this forum) One was Ron Lampert who I understand now lives in Northern Minnsota and is making (of all things) pool cues!!!!! Ron was a master and his work was spectacular and set a standard to work toward.....I'm still no way close to it!! The other man is Jim Kobe whose work is also in a league as to aspire to.....I'm certain I'll never come close to his work either..... That said I still love doing this and will until I can't anymore...it's my fun in life. BTW....I'm bluing today and the first stuff will be done in a few hours.....here's hoping for the best! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." It is an optical illusion. I will get a picture with a different background and post it.

Vapodog I have seen Ron Lampert's work and you are correct. Jewel like would be a good way to describe it. I spoke to him a few years ago and he said he would still saw a mauser action in half and make it .250 savage lenght for about $500.00. Wish I would have taken him up on it. He never said anything about pool cues.
