I just came into a NIB Weatherby Vanguard in 300 WBY Magnum. Would this make a decent action for a 458AR? I have a 21 inch barrel in 458AI that I would like to use. The barrel will need some lathe work to make it work but that's miner. Anybody want to throw in their two cents? I would appreciate your opinions. bewildered

Sell or trade it towards a MK V action built in Paso Robles. There was a complete rifle for sale here for $1200 or something recently.

I'm not looking to get rid of the rifle. I have several different Magnum Mauser actions that are ready to go. Maybe I phrased my question wrong. I would like to build a big bore on this Vanguard action. My question is "is it a good enough and strong enough action to build a big bore? It is a very large action and looks strong but is it? I would like to build it on this new action. I do all my own metal work. I would not go out of my way to buy a Weatherby action to build on. There are too many superior actions that are better suited for this kind of project. I don't have much invested in this new Vanguard that's why I inquired. fishing

OC,
Are you asking about a 458 ackley or a 458AR (i kind like being confused with parker) ..?

since the action strength will be measured by pressure and bolt thrust, the vangard action is designed for the 65K webby rounds and 14448 psi bolt thrust, you can load either in it .. the 458 ackley will drop more or less right in...

still a pushfeed, but the howa 1500/vangard action does work nice

Jeffeosso, the barrel is a 450 Ackley. It has chamber problems and I want to cut it back and rechamber to 456 AR. The barrel is short already but needs to be set back .300 to clean up the chamber. I looked at the drawings of the 456 AR and like the idea of the Cartridge length be shorter than the full length magnum and still do the same job or better. Push feed is the only deterent. I might just use one of the Mausers off the shelf. Thanks for the response to my question. fishing

I'm seriously considering the Turkish Mauser I have sitting on the shelf. It's a large ring 98 with small ring thread. The barrel's shank is one inch diameter while the turk is .960 with a real fine thread. Looks like it'll be an easier make-over. The action I'm considering is already to go except the bolt face will need to be openned up to .532 and hardness tested. popcorn

toomany tools, thanks for the dimensions on the Vanguard. thumb

Jeffy, when I'm ready for the chamber I'll holler and make it a 456 AR. BOOM
