Iron sights on a new Winchester Classic Featherweight.....anybody done it?

I'm wondering if anybody has installed irons on any of the "new" model Classic featherweights?

I picked up a stainless in .308 awhile back that has turned into a suprising shooter, and would like to install a set of "backup" irons, although there isn't much 'meat' there.

Perhaps a banded NECG front(looks like there is one this small in the Brownells catalog...the muzzle is .554).

Recommendations?

Get the Brockman pop-up peep/Talley bases for the rear sight. It's a lot more functional than a barrel mounted rear sight.

Isn't that the truth....definately "back-up" sights.....not for pleasure shooting with this stock.

There was a time when a gun should have no sights on the barrel.....now the reverse is true for me.....even my M-70 featherweight has stylish iron sights ...they look good and function as a back up.

These sights are actually Winchester take offs from former Ranger rifles....they are actually pretty good. I have two made this way.

Vapodog,

Could you show the whole rifle? I hate to even ask, as I'm a failure posting any pictures myself.

But I just picked up a Model 70 left-hand in .300 WM. I like to have iron backups, but I'm sort of impressed with how clean it is with the bare barrel and the dual dovetail mounts I had in the drawer. Not very practical for rapid changeover if the scope breaks though. And I've had two of those in the last six months.

And like you guys say, the high Model 70 comb isn't very pleasant for getting down on iron sights.

Here's my Winchester 70 Stainless Featherweight 30-06 with barrel shortened to 21". NECG "Classic" rear and Ashley front with blade. Hell for stout.

Hi, rooted around here's what I've got:

http://www.xssights.com

Front blade (Stripe Front Post) is Part# 11-2006A-450-2 (.375 x 60 x .095 dovetail / .100W x .450H., .340 Base ).

Call and let the gal at XS (formerly Ashley Outdoors) know you want the screw-on (two screw) dovetail front ramp that accomodates the above Front Post... she'll know the part number.

Order the Classic Rear Sight direct from NECG (603)-469-3450. It's Part # R-201 (.730" / .830"). I attatched it so that the rear of the base is 3.5" forward of the front receiver ring. This is the distance Ruger attatches the rear sight and makes most sense for scope mounting and keeping the front sight a bit lower... the barrel tapers quite a bit and necessitates a fairly high front sight.

LOL, glad to help!

Also, bear in mind my front blade is the .450" tall part but my barrel is 21" and the front sight is set .5" from the muzzle... if you mount yours the same as mine but on a 22" barrel you "may" need the .500" blade. Good news is XS supplies a little plastic post you can cut to get the exact height.
