While this relationship may be total farce, have a look. I am NOT suggesting that this be a replacement for measuring, but how about for guessing?

But, I took my shirt sleeve length, subtracted a hand lengh, and divided by 2, and that wound up pretty close to my LOP..

(38-8.5)/2 =14.75 ... 15 is long but good...

take a 36 shirt, an 7.75 hand, and you get 14.125

34 shirt, 6.5" hand, 13.75...

Adjusting for build, of course, but I bet this is in the ballpark for most guys???

What if you're built like an ape? or, or, you measure your shirts by the number of X's on the tag? Got one for that? Big Grin

(34-8)/2=13

If I use your formula with my measurements I get a stock with the correct LOP for my daughter. I think you're really on to something.

ramrod, your neck factors into it also. For me, I could use the inseam length of my pants, subtract the width of my left thumb and be right on. Wink And has about the same merit.

The method that Ray Price taught me on a scoped rifle was to lay your head on the stock and measure the distance between your pistol grip hand thumb and your nose. You want 1 1/2" to 2". If you don't have it, increase or decrease as necessary. It ain't real rocket science and you do not have to be precise with it on a rifle. The drop on a stock on a shotgun brings up a lot of other variables.

Works out for me, at least for rifles. 35 - 7 1/2 = 13.75

I like a bit longer for shotguns.

Well I have short arms and small hands and I still come up short as well.

Using your method it comes to a LOP of 12.5. That worked fine when I was 11 yrs old.

How about this :-)

(sleeve/2)+(chest-neck)-(hand/2)

(35/2)+(16.5-16)-(7.5/2)=14.25

The chest is the distance across your chest not including your shoulders.

OK This is a joke for the old-timers here but according to that, Fjold must have a LOP of about 20 inches!

Actually, and maybe coincidently, it works for me. I wear a dress shirt with a 34/35 sleeve, if I take 8" (just a touch under but didn't feel like being too precise) off 35 I get 27, divide by 2 and I get 13.5, which sounds short but I like. (most of mine are about 13.75 I think and I am planning on cutting them at some point in time).

Jeffe -

With your talent and equipment, why haven't you taken a couple of stock patterns you really like and some low grade wood, and built yourself a couple of "try guns"? You know, with adjustments for LOP, adjustable comb-height, etc.....maybe even adjustable cheekpiece thickness.

As I am sure you know, the same dimensions which may feel right for one barreled action may not feel perfect for the next, so you might want to build one for each of a couple of different actions you commonly use.

With a "try gun", you can even measure right dimensions for summer shirt-sleeve shooting, and for winter wearing-a-parka riflery. As many guns as you have, it might be a good thing to have a few specially for the cold season and a few more for the opposite weather.

My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

I have a completely different system.

I just keep getting the stock cut back until I can get close enough to see thru the scope.

jeffe,

I had to check this idea out. It works for me if I assume that a legal measurement of a handswidth is still 4".

That will place your eye in reasonable distance for rifle scope eye relief and stop you from gettng banged by the scope and or your thumb under recoil.

As usual, chic is more right than just about anyone on AR when it comes to stocks.
more than an inch from thumb... under 2"...
