I have a pre-64 Model 70 and I noticed that with the screws loose the action rocks in the stock. If I push down on the barrel and then down on the rear tang the action pivots around the recoil lug. I thought this was a bad sign so took it to the local gunsmith. He charged me $100 to rebed it and yet it still rocks the same as before. Did he do a lousy bedding job? Rufous.

If you describe pre and post condition accurately, then yes he REALLY did do a lousy job. Rocking will guarantee some sort of streass when buttoned down. Did he bed, or glass bed? LouisB Heck since you are not expecting great results, I would rebed it for 250 bucks . . .plus shipping and handling of course!

Sounds like maybe the barrel is free floated to me.
