rufousaction rocks in stock-is this a problem?
I have a pre-64 Model 70 and I noticed that with the screws loose the action rocks in the stock. If I push down on the barrel and then down on the rear tang the action pivots around the recoil lug. I thought this was a bad sign so took it to the local gunsmith. He charged me $100 to rebed it and yet it still rocks the same as before. Did he do a lousy bedding job? Rufous.

TCLouisIf you describe pre and post condition accurately,
then yes he REALLY did do a lousy job.
Rocking will guarantee some sort of streass when buttoned down.
Did he bed, or glass bed?

Heck since you are not expecting great results, I would rebed it for 250 bucks . . .plus shipping and handling of course!

<G.Malmborg>Heres the test. Tighten your guard screws, front, rear and then lightly on the middle screw. Now place your hand around the barrel and forend and release the tension on the front guard screw. There should be ZERO movement between the barrel and stock when you do this. If you feel the slightest movement, then the action is binding somewheres. If the barrel trys to climb out of the stock as you release the front screw, then the rear tang area needs support.
Good luck,
Malm

<t_bob38>Sounds like maybe the barrel is free floated to me.
