I've been using Generic Cadd since my DOS days. It still runs under Win/98. The software does an OK job of makinr GCD to DXF to TIF files. Anyone else use CAD software...

So here's a pic of a proposed Mini Mauser (7mmBR:-) Burris Short Mag 2-7, S&K mounts, Octagon bbl, tang safety, etc..

It's a 22-250 now but will be 7mm BR soon. GCADD creates GCD files but can save as DXF or in image files like BMP TIF IMG.

The DXF may need a little editing in what ever software you're using.

I'm using rhino3d, I use it for making drawings and such. Nice software for 3d solids. Customers really like it, they know what their buying. I think most companies use it as a translator, you can download almost any file and translate it into another format.

Hello Guys

Nice work. Do we know anyone with firearms expertise that could "draw up" an action ?? I have some ideas for a single shot, and have talked with local CAD professionals, but as they don't have a familiarity with firearms it is a very expensive exercise. As an example, an operator who knows what the standard dimensions for a firing pin will draw it right first time - anyone looking at the mess lots of the patent drawing for firearms are will see what I mean . . .

Cheers - Foster

I work in AutoCAD, Solid Works and UG, just depends on what the original was in.

Desinging and action from the ground up takes TIME and time at Engineering Saleries is EXPENCIVE. I suggest you draw it up on paper with all the dims and then have it translated into a Solids package.

I use AutoCAD 2002 at work. Years ago I was a draftsman/designer on pencil and paper. CAD is really great for design work. You do your design study and final drawing essentially at the same time. As a project manager, I don't use it every day anymore, but enough to keep my hand in.

Rusty,

I got my feet wet with UG or Unigraphics. It both a CAD and CAM (computer aided manufacturing) program. It was great for programming CNC milling and turning centers. It was expencive to use, I think the monthly cost for each update was $1,200, and that after you bought the software package.

I have AutoCAD 2006 on my laptop here at work. Nice package, but 95% of what I do is 2D electrical diagrams and such.

If we weren't so busy I'm sure one guy here at the office in our Mechanical Engineering group would do it...hunter, ME, and has a lot of CAD experience. He did some architerical work on the side years back, but hasn't had time for a 2nd job lately.

Can't comment on CAD, but I have been thinking of making a mini mauser 22X250 into a 7BR. I have ammo and dies, and it's the perfect rig for a stalking rifle. I figure 120's @ 2700 ought to do the trick.

Autocad is the Gold standard but General cadd is the next generation of Generic Cadd. I'm on the Rhino e.mail list and that seems like an excellent tool.

Paul. I have the 7mmBR dies too, just waiting for the bottom metal :-)

I've tried for yrs to come up with a copy of ANY CAD program.
I'm retired and don't have the funds to buy one outright, and don't have access any other way.

I do a lot of tinkering on my own and my hand sketching is sometimes hard for even me to make out what it was.

Is there anyone here willing to help me out that way?

Thanks much,

George

Feel free to send me a PM, I taught CAD for many years so I'd be more than happy to help you get started.

and let's not ocnfused CAD programs with solids programs... it's a rather difficult thing to get your head to bend around the other, when you are skilled with the one.

for instance, i've been using autocad, off and on, since v9 .. and autocad lt (which is weird), ... then at work we use visio ALOT.. which can be used as a fair 2d cad system...

then I started with solidswork, followed by alibre' ....

so, in autocad, you make a line at a distance and direction... or a square of X H/W...

in solid programs, you make a SHAPE of a square, and then set the measurements.

and when you get into a complex shape, in a solid program you make the shape (say a tuning fork) in 3d.. and you now want to change the width... if you do that in a cad program, you reset the width... in a solid program (by default) if you grab it and change the width, it does a resolved change, that changes teh entire object UNLESS you specifically say "unresolved" move.
