Now, what do i do with this?

This is an FN-made commercial (H-ring) receiver that is unfinished. Still needs some cuts made and hardening, but all-in-all it's pretty much a blank canvas.

In its single-shot configuration (the bottom is un-cut for a magazine well), it could be made to feed any reasonable cartridge (375-length included).

Again, it's un-hardened so square bridges/welding/shaping present no problem.

This seems like one that could be worth investing some money in.

So, what should i do with my little diamond in the rough?

Just remove it from the bolt instead of cutting the lug recess.

Are these the Sarco specials....?

You my friend are the victim of sales & marketing if you believe that third lug serves any real purpose. Have you not read Hatcher's experiments with the '03 Springield?

Glad I don't have it or am worrying about it.

I'm not concerned with the cuts that have to be made (including the 3rd lug). Those won't be a problem, as I know where to get them done.

I'm more looking for ideas on how to aesthetically finish out the action.

Seems like a bit of a waste just to make it look like a regular old FN.

Too bad the 798 receiver is NOT made by Remmy. They just put a Remmy barrel on it and call it a Remmy. Those are the actions that Charles Daly used to sell, made by Zastava I believe. Now back to the present thread programming.

The cut for the third lug can and will be done. The third lug stays on the bolt.

I'm looking for ideas on what could be done to creatively finish out this action.

If you've got some ideas, I'd love to hear them or see them.

Back on track:

I'd go with integral square bridges made to accept claw mounts.

Take a look at the ACCG rifle for 2007 for additional ideas.

Me, I'd cut in the stripper clip slot, leave the left siderail without the thumbcut, then surface grind and make a nice guild or stalking style rifle out of it. It would be very unique without the thumbcut but with the chrager slot. Or, use that charger hump to house an integral peep.

How about square bridges with the rear machined for an integral peep sight? Kinda like those old Czech Mauser type rifles had. You could then have the smith mill in dovetails for Warne or Talley ring.

Those would be the next best thing this side of claw mounts.

For a small amount I can ship you a slick VZ-24 action complete and it'll be a lot less than trying to make that "FN" thing work.

Frankly, it looks like a paperweight to me.

I have 2 of them, that I will finish up someday.
I havn't seen a single shot mauser action since I got a SS MK X 20 years ago.

I vote for the double square bridge. Set the action up for 375 H&H, 416 Taylor, 416 Rem Mag, 9.3 x 64, etc.

The front square bridge will have to be built in two stages. Take a piece of steel just thick enough to cut the front "receptacles" through it, then weld that on top of the first layer of the square bridge.

If you decide to go with a "long range" cartridge, make it a single square bridge, and put the front "receptacles" piece into an NECG piece that fits around the barrel like you have on your 404J under construction. Put the front scope ring around the objective lens of a Leupold 6x 42mm scope. That avoids all the hoo haw of building a barrel with an integral top rib or quarter rib.

Definitely add a LaPour safety and an NECG trigger. If you go the "long range" rooute, put on a shotgun style trigger bow. Otherwise, use a 1909 mag box with a Wisner plate, or a Ted Blackburn lower unit.

Solder on a barrel band swivel, or a London Guns type unit that only has the little ring on the bottom of the barrel. Solder on the front sight, but don't do a barrel band unit there either. Make it all look like a between the wars bespoke magazine rifle.

I like that idea too of the claw base out on the barrel with a single square bridge on the rear.

Satterlee is set up to make the necessary cuts and finish out the action for me. I like what he did with the single-square bridge below.

Plenty of options with that rear bridge, to include installation of a three meter spring board....

It would obviously be smaller... like this.

My idea would be to build a lightweight rifle out of it. Build up for claw mount scope base, then finish it off by color case hardening. My choice of caliber would be 6.5-284 or 257 Roberts.
