The picture in the lower left - the wrist checkering.

The "checkering" looks like little spades.

How is this done? Are they glued on? Are they actually carved??

It doesn't look like anything really that much different than what they do on the front and back straps of 1911's etc. Wood might be a little less forgiving though.

I believe I have heard that caled"fish scale".
