Look at this Austrian mauser over at Cabelas website:

The picture in the lower left - the wrist checkering.

The "checkering" looks like little spades.

How is this done? Are they glued on? Are they actually carved??

Very carefully?

It doesn't look like anything really that much different than what they do on the front and back straps of 1911's etc. Wood might be a little less forgiving though. Smiler

I don't like the ventilated rubber recoil pad on a rifle like this one.
