A VZ-24 is one of the better surplus Mausers. The action is up to the task. I would be more concerned with the customizing than the action. Terry -------------------------------------------- Well, other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?

Excellent action, if it hasn't been abused. Check the headspace. The action was originally an 8x57mm and if someone hotrodded it as a 300 mag, they could have set the lugs back. I'm not saying they did, but it is a possibility. Otherwise, it was produced in Checkloslovakia, by some of the best military firearms makers of the time. They also made the model 29 Persians. Plus others. Where is Vapodog, this is one of his favorite actions. He knows all about them. And can tell you what to look for. I agree with TC1. Make sure it WORKS properly.

I am puting a 35 Whelan together on a VZ-24. what are the best stock options? I am using a # 4 shillen (SP?). The timmney trigger is installed. I have got to decide on the bolt handle --- will that effect the stock choice? Also --- I am going to scope it, What safety? Thanks, Lee

Lee, essentially is a mauser 98, initially made under license as a cz-24 (thanks z1r) and a vz-24 after being occupied by germany. of the milsurp straight 98 actions, it is very high on my list for being desirable, and generally doesn't have to be heat treated. you can now look at the overall condition of the action and stock, to see how well it was done. if you pass, please PM me where and the price, as I may pull the barrel off and rebarrel for an AR jeffe opinions vary band of bubbas and STC hunting Club Information on Ammoguide about the416AR, 458AR, 470AR, 500AR What is an AR round? your question is exactly just like asking if a used car is a good one to buy. Maybe, maybe not. What brand it is only has so much importance when making the decision. How shiney and clean the paint on the car, or the stock and finish on this rifle, does not necessarily matter at all. We don't know you and your background, so we have to make some assumptions. I have never heard anyone ask the question about a VZ 24 who was experienced at knowing what had to be done to convert a military 98 to handle a belted round. There is a lot to the job and if done incorrectly, can really screw up the rifle. For you to get meaningful input on the rifle in question, we would either need to know who did it (assuming one of us actually knew, or knew of, the person) or someone who knows how to do the job needs to hold it in their hands.

good morning, i agree with mark. the vz24 will hanlde the 300 win unless it is done right, it can be a mess. i have a vz24 in 300win mag, but i also rechambered a 29"m98 premo barrel to 8mm/300win mag. it took alot of work but it was worth it.what is your your degree of experiance building rifles? get some advise on this subject before attempting the project. in the end if done right it will be great. gotta go to work,so i'll see ya'll late .Dave when in rome, punt

The VZ-24 is IMO the finest of the milsurp 98 Mausers a going. Every one I've worked on is smoother than goose shit......and that's saying a lot. I have three of them in process now and one done. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Leemar28 If you want to get a good idea of some of the work involved in converting a 98 to a magnum, Pick up a copy of the book RifleSmithing by Jack Mitchell. There are chapters in there on converting the bolt face to magnum dimensions, welding on bolt handles, barrleing, etc. If you are going to put a new safety on the rilfe, might I suggest taking a look at the newest creation in 3 position safeties from Timan, AKA Stewart Satterlee. He is now making one that closely resembles the look of the original mauser safety but of course works well for scope use. The bolt handles from Half Moon Rifle Shop really look nice. Finally, if you are going to convert a 98 to magnum, a good idea would be to see if you can find a Mark X that is already in magnum configuration. You can look at it closely and see how the rails are configured for proper feeding of magnum cartridges. Also, you are probably going to have to either modify the bottom metal on your VZ or you are going to have to purchase new. If you know how to weld and you have access to a milling machine you can modify the one that is on there. Otherwise, the Blackburn unit looks very nice (although it is a bit expensive).

I've looked it over pretty good. Bolt face has been opened up correctly. Head space checked out as well. Cant tell if the rails have been modified or not. I have several 98's and F.N. actiond rifles. Just was not familer with the VZ 24 when it was offered to me. I recignised it when I saw it. Thanks for all of your in put.......... Hang on TITE !!

I converted a VZ24 to 300 Win Mag. I opened the bolt face and the extractor. I opened the mag well ends. I opened the feed lips. I would look at the workmanship at those spots. I would also test to see if it will feed and eject dummy ammo with pointed tips and 3.34" OAL. Then see if it will feed when upside down. See how scratched up the ammo gets. I am a below average amateur gunsmith that did it all right the first time, but there are plenty of really good professional gunsmiths that made lousy 300 WM conversions. I got lucky.
