I'm sure this is a dumb question but how do you tell the difference between a 96 action and a 98 action on a full feature custom rifle? The rifle is said to be a 98 but with the caliber being 6.5x55 I want to be able to tell the difference.

The "quick and easy" / "down and dirty" if the gun has not been converted, the 96, any pre 98 cocks on closing. Closes a bit harder. The 98 cocks on opening and closing is alot easier. The pre 98's can be converted to "cock on opening." Luck. Then there is distance between action screws. I don't recall the difference, but it is different.

Dear LJS: Take the bolt out, and look at the rear portion of it. If there is a third lug (which is the safety lug), then its an 1898 Mauser. If no third lug, then it probably is an 1896 Mauser or an earlier model. Sincerely, Chris Bemis
