Hello, I have been searching around for a tiger stripe/curly maple gunstock blank. I have tried just about everybody. The problem I am running into is the size of the blank that I need.

The dimensions are

36 inches long
8 wide
3 inches thick

I am looking for high grade maple. Lots of stripes and a good grain.

Can anybody help?

have you tired here:

Tigerhunt

When I was in high school I knew a group of muzzle loader builders and they got their maple from Tigerhunt.

EBay often has some nice curly maple that is suitable for gunstocks. Search under "maple lumber," "maple gunstock," and "maple stock blank." The "maple lumber search will give you the most hits. Keep your eye on it for a few weeks and you will likely find one that will work for you.

Of course, if you decide to go with walnut, give CLay a call! I'll be ordering another blank from him in a couple of weeks

Thanks Clay, Maybe you can come up with something. One thing I forgot to mention is that the width has to maintain 8 inches from the butt clear up to the pistol grip area. Also if the stock is longer, thicker or wider thats even better.

Thanks

Marc, I called Tigerhunt about a month and a half ago. He is also supposed to be working on it. I did call him again today, and he said will look some more.

I have a red maple grade 3 Tiger hunt blank in my shop. Very nice looking wood. I have had it for 8 years now. I wouldnt sell it in the past cause I always wanted a worthy project. I might need to change my mind someday.

Have you tried looking on a Wood turners guild sight ?. I will inquire with a couple of custom hardwood purveyors I know . I'll be in touch after the Holliday week .

Another source is Flooring manufactures and veneer cutters ( at the Mill level ) I've been 70% successful when being straight up with them in asking for a particular item . Every once in a while one of them is a shooter / so they keep two eyes out . ... salute

I have just exhausted myself looking into the internet for a maple blank. I've talked to people from Maine all the way to Washington. And spent a countless amount of time looking for a Maple blank that was large enough for my project. I found alot of maple that was flat sawn, but that's not what I wanted. Most of the blanks that had alot of striping from the butt all the way to the forend were for your typical riflestock. Not a target stock blank.

Some of the nicest maple that I found for a regular gunstock were the property of Cecil Fredi. Real nice guy. Here's his site below.

http://www.gunstockblanks.com/

I just today talked with a guy named Gordon who runs Old Tree Gun blanks. This wasn't the first time we had visited. But it pays to be persistant and to call people every so often. Just to see if there inventory has changed or maybe they know of someone who can help. I sent Gordon an email, and in this email was a picture of a maple stock. This would show him what type of figure I was looking for. Gordon told me he would see what he could find for me.
But it might be a while before he found something that was that nice.

A few hours later Gordon called me, and told me he had found what I needed. He said he had called everyone he could think of. And finally he had found someone who could help.

Here is Gordon's site below.

http://www.oldtreegunblanks.com/

He sent me a picture of the wood by email. I called him and we dicussed my wants.

Looks like I bought myself a gunblank.

Gordon told me if I wasn't happy with the blank I could return it.

I will let everyone know how this turns out.

I also want to thank everyone who posted trying to help.

Have you ever tried west coast big-leaf maple in the quilt?

I have two of these, but they are only 2 inches thick.

Maxbear,
We found you plenty of pieces to choose from. They are 2.25 inches thick to about 3.5 inches thick. The 8 inches is no problem.
It is eastern rock maple with some very nice curl in it.
Cut 10 years ago.

Give us a call if you like.

You might try Dunlap Woodcraft (http://www.dunlapwoodcrafts.com/) They are a big supplier of blanks for the custom muzzleloader crowd. I've dealt with both Dunlap and Tigerhunt, and both have top-notch wood.

You may already have your blank but if not I'll give another thumbs up for Luxus.

Few people I've had the pleasure to meet and work with are as professional and enjoyable to work with than Clay and Adam! A+ in my book.

+3 for Luxus!

I was in Cincinnati yesterday and got 2 from him. I was in a big truck and couldn't get around so Adam (AFreeman) met me in a parking lot with a bunch of wood in his pickup truck for me to pick through. A wood dealer that makes house calls is a rare thing. beer

Below are some pictures of a very beautiful blank I got from him. The layout is going to be a little tight, but I think it's going to be a fine stock when finished. I know it's not Maple, but I had to show it off Razzer

ahh, things happen. I wish I had that piece I sold Forrest back Frowner So much beautiful wood and so little cash. I'm supposed to be getting some news from Mark Stratton today though so I think the piece you see in the picture is going to be the one.

hey Terry and Trez, thanks.

Terry,
That is a fine Circassian blank you picked.

I read in a different post something about true Circassian. This topic comes up with some consistency. We do have true Circassian from the Caucuses region. Rare and expensive for us to get, they have no infrastructure in those areas, but it is worth every bit of it.

Anyway, the blank in that other thread is from one of the "stan" areas. Nothing like your blank above.

You have something very special in that blank above. It has a great many shades of reds and golds with great black lines. Super wood quality as well, which is TOO often over looked by some.

Thanks again Terry.

Adam
