I have a CZ550 American in 6.5x55 that i have not shot yet. I want replace the 4x4 timber they call a stock with something that is lighter and trimmer. I'm open to wood or synthetic as long as i can shave some weight and not spend as much for the stock as the rifle cost. Anyone else think that these CZs need to go on a diet?

Id like to get a CZ550 just so I could take a file to the stock and reshape it! ![]()

Yes. Those stocks have at least 20% too much wood. Trouble is that unless you're handy with rasps, sandpaper and checkering tools, you're going to have to pay someone at least as much as the rifle cost, if not more, to fix the as issued stock. Not sure what aftermarket stocks are available, but to my way of thinking, providing those would be a growth business for some enterprising stockmaker. Id like to turn one of those CZ stocks into a Rigby style, with a shorter forend and a schnable(sp), knife edge comb, open grip. etc It would be a nice piece of wood to work with im sure, plus its already inleted.

OK: So How about putting this stock on a pantograph machine? I think that is the term, And machining the stock to a Ruger Hawkeye pattern or M70 featherweight. I realize the CZ550 is a big wide action and you need to keep a certain amount of wood around it for strength, But can it be done for a reasonable amount of cash? And who is set up to do it? I also like the stock on my CZ model 3 which is a Montana action, Also a big and wide action but the stock has a nice slim forend and wrist and really feels good but that 550 wood feels very blocky in my hands. Actually the CZ-3 stock is about perfect, Or a synthetic if a good one is available.
