What is the purpose of the spring and pin pushing on the ring that the screw goes through on the bolt stop of a Ruger M77?

It tensions the bolt stop so it will be held snugly against the side of the action and not flop around.

In addition, the spring acts as a cushion and prevents deformation of the left locking lug from battering during rapidfire operation. I think the Ruger bolt stop is one of Ruger's clever ideas. Regards, Bill.
