I found a nice stock with great grain through the forend and down through the wrist, perfect for heavy recoil.

Unfortunately it is inletted for a pre-98 length action.

I just remembered I have a Mexican 98 receiver around.

Any suggestions?

Since your post implies that you want a bigger caliber I'd go with the 376 Steyr or the Z-Hat version of it necked to 416. One of the posters here on the board had one made and seemed to like it a lot.

There is alwalys the 358 Winchester or the new 338 Federal and if you want something really esoteric, there are all the venerable Mausers from 9.3 and up on the 8 x 57 case.

The 7x57 or 6.5x55 would be my first choices but as some one pointed out, you seem to be implying that you'd like a bigger round. In that case I'd wholeheartedly recommend the 9.3x57.

When I get back from Cairo next year mine is going to be either a 8x57 or 338 Fed. The time in Cairo gives me something to ponder and see what the real world results of the 338 are.

I have been leaning towards the 358 Win, if for no other reason than I can shoot pistol bullets through it.

I suppose that contradicts my original thinking of a heavy recoil cartridge, but I could still punish my shoulder if need be thumb

Another medium bore cartridge like a 7x57, Roberts, or 6.5x55 doesnt excite me... Ive just got too many and I'd rather not squander the recoil 'potential' of this stock.

9.3's also came to mind, but Brownells is slim on barrels, reamers etc.

376 Steyr is an interesting option, what with brass, dies, bullets etc being readily available.

What are your opinions of the 358 Win vs 35 Whelen? Both have brass available.

Decisions, decisions!

Thanks for the replys, guys.

In this application the .358 wins hands down. You might consider a 9x57. It would split the difference between the two and work in the action like it was made for it.

You can get the reamer straight from PTG. Easy to find barrels, cheap pistol bullets an option. Although I've never been attracted to their use in a rifle.

Not for any serious use aside from thinning out the herds of steel plates and tin cans known to roam the countryside. thumb

To begin with I have Mex actions in 6.5x55, 250 Sav Imp, 257 Robt. Imp and the 35 Rem.
If I had it to do over again I would make the 35 into the 358 in the beginning. I will get around to it some day. So my vote would be with the 358 and never look back.

9.3x57 is a sweet round, or you could be very unique and do a 10.75x57. You will be the only kid on your block with one. Sounds like you are looking for something different and not a medium bore.

A set of belt swaging dies set me on the road to my most rediculas rifle yet. I have a 1936 mex mauser, dakota safety, timney trigger ect ect. It's going to be in 400/375 belted nitro. I found a set of RCBS dies, got my reamer now, and waiting on my barrel blank. I know, I'm sick, sick, sick. Big Grin

Well, the search is done.

I looked in my reamer box today, and there it was: 358 Win.

I guess I won't be as exotic as a 9.3, but hey cant win em all.

Now I actually have to decise which of the 3 or 4 actions I will use. Maybe I will get ambitious and do some fancy metalwork, like a welded rear bridge or something along those lines.

Thanks guys,

Spencer

I have shot one. Interesting caliber, but it really is no more thana belted 9.5 Mannlicher, but it is the first belted case!

I'd most likely have to go with the 376 Steyer. Build it like any other Safari rifle 4 shot mag.
One in the chamber, All the BS. Nice little Intermediate 375 Safari Style. Shit, Yank out all the stops and do one in Titanium, Gee let check with the boss. Boss says it's ok guys. go ahead and do it in titanium sounds good. Is cost a factor, No there's no real money in this so just blow the lid off it for the the fun of it.
Ok Boss will do.

You may want to consider the 6mm Remington for your Mex. It would require no modifications for the action since it is based on the 7X57 case. You could also build it superlight, something you may want to consider if you go with a .358 Win or something of that ilk. Lightweight .358s have a lot of recoil. I shoot my 6mm, built on a 36 Mex, a lot more than I thought I would. Very effecient cartridge.

As for the 6mm, I like it alot but already have one which I shoot very often.

I am not too concerned with weight although the barrel will probably be 20" - 22"

Recoil is not a concern.

I saw a 358 Winchester on a 1910 Mex that Jack Hamrick built some years ago, and it was absolutely stunning.
