Trying to put a Leupold 1.75-6x scope on an M77 Ruger MKII in set of Ruger rings that came with the rifle. When mounted, the the scope doesn't have enough adjustment to move to the center collimator. Scope is a good one so no problems there. Looking through the scope at the collimator, the vertical crosshair is six lines to the right. Have tried adding a thin shim to the edge of one ring, but it is not enough.
Any suggestions??

You might try adding a shim to the opposite sides of each ring to help line things up. Put rosin or powdered sugar on all the surfaces to keep things from slipping.

Cancel that---on a standard Ruger base, you can't reverse the rings. You can move one ring sideways by using a cutoff wheel on a Dremel to grind off a bit from the inside of the fixed dovetail side of one ring. Won't show when on the rifle, but you can touchup with cold blue. Or use a triangle file, if the ring is soft enough.

Jefeosso, I woke up this morning and thought of exactly the same thing. I've done this before and it works...sometimes. At least often enough. My mind must have been asleep last night.
Thanks guys for all your suggestions.

Yep they are. Got home this afternoon and that was the first thing I noticed...different height front and rear rings.
I then checked on a spare set of Ruger rings I had and exchanged one of those for the front ring on the Ruger 77. It did not make things perfect, but did provide a little more room. Might have to shoot it just to find out how close it now is.

Normally I buy rings in pairs.
But to my surprise, Brownells sent me a single Ruger ring:

I guess I need to read the fine print.

It ain'ty the first time it has happened. Did you move the adjustment in the right direction? I've had guys bring their stuff to the shop with the same problem.

When looking through the collimator, if you need to move the crosshairs to the left, don't look at the direction of movement on the scope turret. It has to move in the opposite direction. Move it while looking through the collimator and you will see if it goes in the right direction. Maybe, maybe not!

Jim: Yep. have been using a collimator for years.
I've put a shim on the left side of the front ring. This is the non-moving side for the clamp on the ring. It also helped, but not enought. I'll shoot it this weekend and see if I need to "move metal" on the rings.
One last thing I tried was lapping the rings with a lapping tool I have. This helped give me a little more elevation adjustment, but did nothing for the windage.

Model 77 scope ring sets are of a stepped height design. The short ring is always mounted on the front receiver ring. The high scope ring is always mounted on the rear receiver ring. Scope ring sets are sized to raise the center line of the scope by 1/8" increments from "low" through "high".
Application:
LOW scope rings generally will accept up to a 32mm or smaller scope objective diameter
MEDIUM scope rings generally will accept up to a 42mm or smaller scope objective diameter
HIGH scope rings generally will accept up to a 52mm or smaller scope objective diameter
SINGLE OFFSET scope rings generally will bring scope back 1/2" for eye relief.

Concur on the ring height. My problem is insufficient windage.

I had the same problem with one of my M77's. To get me through the hunting season I put an aluminum shim on the left side of the front ring, cut in a semicircle to fit in the dovetail portion. Sent it back to Ruger and they replaced the rings. Seems the ring or rings was machined off center.
