I have one coming up or maybe more.

Please tell me. You get them heat treated before or after the machining ie blueprinting etc?

I have two, I wasn't in a rush as when I spoke to them they said they weren't going to stop doing it any time soon. Mine still have the small flats from being surface ground though and I'm guessing it's best to have that polished out before heat treating them, save some work for whomever is doing it when they're done??

Red
PS
do you mean action and bolt? or receiver and bolt?
that also seems higher than I remember, but maybe it's gone up?

I was supposed to be coordinating a group shipment with Chic and Trez.

Life has kinda gotten in the way and I dropped the ball.

When I spoke to Jim he said that it would be $125 for 10 receivers and bolts, but that we could add additional unit for a nominal price.

IIRC Jim was somewhat concerned that shipping could be a PITA. Our solution was to send prepaid self addressed flat rate boxes for return shipping.

One thing that we never figured out was hot to mark our stuff so that Packmet could easily identify what parts go to who.

Jason - Serial numbers? or some high heat steel plate with wire to twist onto the bolt with the same SN as the receiver?

Well, I was worried about bolts that have had the handle replaced(therefore no SN), and small parts like bolt shrouds that have been annealed and set up for Wisner 2pos safeties.

I was thinking of asking Jim about using steel wire. My worry is that this might somehow cause a problem. Like if they need to have them free to turn over while cooking Wink

And BTW, IIRC May 15 was the deadline that I had set for us to have our stuff together.....

May 15 of 2009! And because I dropped the ball our stuff still sits.

Doesn't an action need to be annealed before it's machined, blueprinted, etc.? Do they have a group rate on annealing? I could send a bunch in for that and harden them as they get done.

Or do you guys self anneal?

You could anneal the before blueprinting(saves on tool wear), but I would bet that 99% are not annealed before blueprinting.

I won't make it by then, I need to have more work done on mine and it's low priority in the funds distribution arena.

are one or both parties required to have an FFL to ship actions for this work?

Howard,
pacmet has an ffl, and just like any other gunsmith, you can send your gun in for work, and they send it back.

i assume they can do springfields .. can ask ..

I was recently up this road.

The Springfield will have to go as a separate shipment, i.e. separate $125. Most likely the Spanish Destroyer unless it is similar to mauser in material, mass, and hardness.

They told me same price, $125 for 1pc or 20pcs, this is stripped bolts and stripped receivers; they may allow a small additional part at their convenience.

Why not etch serial numbers on ther bolts or possibly ask if copper wire and aluminum tags will be acceptable.

ETA: I wound up not using PacMet. I don't know if their gun guy was having a bad day or if they only do mausers. I was given all of the prices etc, but he balked when found out it was pre 64 Win 70's. He said if I knew the composition and hardness he would do them. I am sure the M1903 Springfield will fall into this. I went with Blanchards in Salt Lake City, UT and can't recommend them high enough. They did require an FFL to return the receivers to though.

Let me be clear. If you are doing 98's PacMetals seems to be the clear choice.

Blanchards's was a minimum price for a bolt & receiver and then like $10-$15 for each additional big piece. He said he would do some smaller parts added in for free. I did not send any. It was like $130 to include shipping for 2 stripped bolts and 2 stripped receivers.
