depends what you intend to use on, ,510 are much more expensive than 500 bullets but the 500's are not made as tough. if you use or cast your your own not much difference. what source for 3" 500 brass?

Just was trying to prevent reaming barrel to .510..Just rechamberin by lengthening chamber (ex 458 Win to Lott) Plus would still be able to shoot 500 Smith Ammo...Oh well probably just go al the way to 50/110 or even 50/140!!! Thanks....Barrel reamer smith needed!

No you can't rebore to .510 as the groove diameter is too big for that; you will not clean up the .500 groove diameter of the .500 S&W. IE, you can't rebore a .500 groove barrel to end up with a .500 bore diameter. Not enough metal to ream the old barrel clean. I have a 50-110 reamer, and .510 barrels, in stock. You can make a .500-110 wildcat to do what you want but as stated, all the .500 bullets are made for pistols, which might be all you need for hogs. You will need a custom reamer for that. But cheaper than a re-bore.

Cost to rechamber: $75. Cost to rebore; I can't re-bore, but it is more than that. Of course, you need a reamer, and my current 50-110 is ground for .510 bullets. Custom reamers are about $160 or so, but you will have it for re-use or re-sale later. I don't mind buying reamers for jobs that I might have later, but in this case, no one will ever want this again, probably. If you want a Ruger #1 458 barrel, I have one of those for sale too.

There are a dozen or so custom shops that make TC barrels. SSK is one of the best but also one of the most expensive. Match Grade Machine is one of the least expensive but SS will bump you to about $400. Edstc.com keeps a lot of stock factory and custom barrels. You have to call; the web list is never up to date and he does not answer emails very often. Watch the auction sites for .510 cartridges that can be rechambered. There is an entire TC world out there if you get hooked.

A re-bore and chamber job was $265 about 8 years ago. So buying a new barrel just to re-bore is probably a lot more than a custom barrel from scratch. Whether it's a good idea technically on a cheap or free barrel can depend on the barrel steel and how it was rifled. If you go that route I'd talk to some people in that business and try to find a barrel company they like to work with.
