What action for a 250 Savage?

This is a pretty general info gathering question. I've been thinking about a light, wood stocked rifle in 250 Sav and maybe AI. Are there any easily obtained actions of the proper size for the 250 case? Saami OAL is 2.515". Of course any short action will do, but that is hardly the point. I have enough pure hunting rifles. This one will hopefully fill the void for an esthetically pleasing, light, trim little walnut/blued rifle. I prefer bolts (but maybe a single shot), and on this I kinda like the CRF (no real reason). Keep in mind this is purely for my viewing and packing pleasure. I don't need a .243, 2506, 25-285, 25 WSM or anything else that may make sense to others. As well, I have a Savage 99, so it is off the list.

So, what are the options available now or in the past that you would build a 250 Savage on?

Well, the only actions currently sized for the 250-3000 are either the higher end single shots like Hagn or Dakota 10, factory stuff like the Remington Model 7 or an old 600, a Mk X Mini Mauser (but the box is a bit short because it is built for the 22-250) or a full-out custom shortened Mauser. Personnaly, I think a Model 7 can be built into a beautiful full stock rifle but that's jsut me....

A shortened M'98 has been discussed here lately and is a superb way (but not cheap) to make a 250 savage.

The 1910 Mexican mauser is also a fine start for a .250 S.

Remington M-7 actions would be fine as well as a M-70 short action.....

All in all IMO the .250 Savage belongs in a shortened commercial Mauser '98 with a 3-pos safety and an 18" octagon barrel in a mannlicher stock. Iron sights only.....no scope.

Just one opinion.

How about rebarreling a Kimber 84M Classic from 22-250 to 250 Savage? If you asked nice I bet they'd sell you the Super America wood...

I built a .250-3000 on a Model 7 just for carrying around the Sonora desert after javelina. Put it in a Macmillan stock, quite handy, not too traditional.

This thread is fairly recent and it seems that the classic action for the .250 is the Mauser Kurz, if you can find one.

Vapodog: Your thoughts are close to mine. It will have a octagon barrel for sure, 3position safety. I hadn't considered a mannlicher stock, but that would be nice as well.

I have a Rem Md 660 that would work, but new bolt handle, 3pos safety, etc. Mauser 98 or at least Model 70 style is my leaning. Wonder if the Montana Rifleman Mini will work (provided they ever make it).

I have posted this action before, and it would work with a fair bit of sweat. It's biggest drawback is the large ring. Sorta defeats the whole svelte gun concept. Really needs to be a small ring.

Well, if it needs to be a small ring I am thinking that the Mex Mauser would probably be just about the best bet becasue you can still find them for relatively reasonable money. Second best would be a cut down G.33/40, although that one might be a bit more expensive.
but then again, what is a few extra bucks to get exactly what you want.

A small ring Husqvarna would be my first choice. I picked one up a few months ago in 6.5 for cheap that has a solid left side on the reciever and I had a cock on open mod and a new bent bolt handle, trigger and low swing safety done, this is now a light, sweet, smooth little shooter and I'll probably look for another to do a .257 Roberts in soon. Saw a couple go on auction go for 250-275$.

I think you threw the Savage 99 idea out the window too fast. It wood make a super good looking wood and blue, light, trim octogon barreled hunting/safe queen. With the right peice of walnut and a little case color.... Well that is my plan for mine someday.

I'd start with a model 70 CRF in 22-250 and go from there. But really, a 7, 700, or PF 70 , or anyother SA PF would be fine too. I persoanlly don't bother much with CRF in sub-30 caliber rifles...

My current "semi-custom" is built on a 722 action. Nice, light, inexpensive, and a fine shooter. I went with a 700 "mountain rifle" contour - really light. 10" twist. 22.5" SS pac-nor barrel. If you're worried about teh extrator, have a good smith put in a sako-style extractor. However, I have yet to really find a reason to make the conversions and I've owned dozens of 721s/722s. But to each their own...

I kind of went the other way with the action length. Instead of trying to find a sub 2.8" SA, I had the throat cut a bit longer than SAAMI specs. This allows me to use the 100-120 to better effect, which is all I use anyway (save for the 90 Barnes X). Here's some pics (as per recent AR etiquette I'd best make clear that the stock is by me and the checkering is by Ahlman's). Weights just a bit over 6 lbs without a scope...

Roll Eyesmine will be put onto a Stevens 200 action that now wares a 22-250 savage barrel. The twist will support the 120 gr. bullets as will the throat. thumb

My problem is the guy I picked to do the work ordered the barrel and than desided to take a trip to Europe. Frowner Eventually it will happen. Roll Eyesroger

Believe it or not, it is the factory handle (it is an early one - 1949 production) that has been buffed to within an inch of it's life... Big Grin

The 722 bolt hand was designed 90 degree to the bolt body, not swept like the 700. I always kind of prefereed the 722 bolt design, but that is just my preference...

Call Mark at Kailua Custom Guns. They have
a professionally "shortened" mauser action in the 250 Savage size for sale at $400.00.

It's #34205 in their "actions" section.

They also have a mauser "banner" Kurtz action
with a lever floorplate for sale at the $600.00 mark.

One option is a 1920 Savage. Small ring, short, lightweight, Springfield style cocking knob, tang safety. That's the good. Sometimes miserable trigger, ugly bottom metal, bolt needs altering, hard as a MS to scope (split bridge) and not readily available. However, they can make a pretty rifle. If you are patient, you may snag one in 250 with a good barrel at a reasonable price. I bought one for $450 a couple of months ago, that needs nothing. I have 2 others (250 & 300) that will get restocked and modified into a matched pair. Just a different and unique approach. There are a couple of links on AR but the pictures are gone, here is one but he only shows the LH side http://www.gunsamerica.com/guns/976695840.htm. Go to http://www.gmartin-auctions.com/gma/catalogs/fall2005catalog.html and look up item 744 (by viewing the cat. a search for it gives you something else) and you can see the one I bought. This shortened Mauser is also still available http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=45587065.
