Why bewildered It will only get you about 100fps increase, and the critters will not know the difference.

Hog killer is right. Not much gain plus you have to have a long action and magazine. If you want to switch go to a 30-06 Ackley. No set back required and you can probably pick up another 100 fps. But to answer your Q, because the 308 is a lot bigger in the shoulder you will have to set the barrel back an inch and a half to clean things up.

Or just use a 308 reamer until you get a 0.004" of crush fit on a sized 30-06 case - viola you are the first on your block to have an improved 30-06 that you can use cheap 308 dies for.

Just a silly question. Why bother with all of this when the two cartridges, for all practical purposes, are ballistically indentical?

This would be about like changing a 7mm/'08 to 7X57mm...

My question is merely how far back a 308 barrel has to be set back to re-chamber to 30-06. Why I choose what I choose really doesnt change these numbers so I dont see what the point is about asking. I think its interesting that there can be so many experts out there when I havent stated my intended purpose either. To each his own I suppose.

Scott,

Obviously, since you had to ask the question, you aren’t going to be doing the work yourself...so why not just take your rifle to a gunsmith and tell him what caliber you want it chambered for? If there’s a problem I’m sure he’ll let you know about it.

You are absolutely right. I did answer your question but it was only after giving some advice that you didn't ask for. I think most forums are like that - guys talking "guns". None of us meant it any other way.

Cheechako- I understand, and I didnt mean to come across too strongly. Just sort of pointing out how off track this was getting.

And Rick, the reason I am asking is because I have no bought the barrel yet. My plans are to cut the threads off and rethread from a rem action to a savage action. But I need to know all the details to see how much of the barrel shank is left for threading before it starts to get into the barrels contour.

If you are looking for a Savage barrel in 30-06 contact Sharp Shooters Supply. You can get a factory Savage barrel that is unfired for around $50-75. They make custom Savage rifles and install their own barrels. They sell the take-offs pretty cheap. If that is what your looking for it will be much cheaper than any machine work by a smith.

assuming you don't care about the same stock fitting, about .65", iirc.. or quite a bit.

unless you have the 30-06 barrel (just about everything has a take off barrel cheap) it's not worth the doing...

sell the 308, buy and 06, and be about 100 bucks ahead, as the stock wont fit the new barrel, if setback

Its a heavy stainless 5R rem barrel in 308 right now with a vias muzzle break. And Im getting it for a great deal. Trying to decide what to do with it now.

My usuall replacement barrels for savages are custom pac-nors. I just thought id buy it and work with it a little later. Who knows, maybe itll sit around and collect dust untill i figure out what to do with it.

Scott,

It took you all of six sentences to clearly and fully explain your logic in what you are trying to do, and why. Had you done that originally perhaps the “off-topic“ comments wouldn’t have been offered up...I know mine wouldn’t have. beer

Rick,

Yes, it doesn't take that long to let everybody know what you're thinking, but it sometimes takes a long time to wade through the well-intentioned "Dont do THAT, do this instead..." sort of comments a broader question always elicits.

It's kind of like when you post a question about an UltraMag project, and you know your threads going to be hijacked by the .300WM vs new mag argument, the belted vs unbelted argument, and plenty of "Dont do THAT!" comments.

Or if you post asking about Springfield sporters, you'll get plenty of "put them back to original".

All well-intentioned, certainly. And the boards are great. But I can see why Scott tried to limit the query.

FWIW,

Steve

Personally, I enjoy it when a thread takes off in a different direction. That's how we learn new stuff. When the day comes when a guy can ask, "How much H4831 can I shoot in my '06?" and we all amswer, "60 grains" then I will look for another forum.

But, I do say, answer the guys Q first and then have at it.

skl1,

You have a somewhat valid point, but I’ve just always found that getting assistance from others is easier (and allot quicker) when I start out by first stating what I am trying to accomplish, and why.

Had Scott explained his reasoning I would have never posted my “silly†question to him.

Rick,

I hear you. You always try to be helpful, and I was hoping you wouldn't take the terse reply from Scott personally. Seemed like you might have your back up a little with the, "All of 6 seconds," comment.

Steve...I seldom take things “personallyâ€, especially on here! Smiler

Few of us on here actually know each other, and therefore it is often difficult to know the meanings behind the typed words, and oftentimes people “misread things.†Case in point...I actually said six “sentencesâ€...not six “seconds.†beer
