| Those ‘P’ marks are normally the Arsenal “proof†mark used by Springfield, Rock Island, Remington and Smith Corona. You will usually find a corresponding ‘P’ stamped on the barrel also if the stock and barrel and original mates from the same armory. |

Yeah, but I have known a few 303 British Enfields that were marked with "P" and they were for Parade Only. These had a hole drilled in the receiver, and were 'legally' unfirable. I don't know much about the M1 carbines. But that's just my 2 cents. |
