This is a photo of a CZ 550 in .243 purchased recently by a friend . To my eye it is very pretty . Have been told by a poster on another forum that the wood is crap and will crack . Would be interested to hear comments from someone who knows more about stock wood than I do .

The hunting imperative was part of every man's soul; some denied or suppressed it, others diverted it into less blatantly violent avenues of expression, wielding clubs on the golf course or racquets on the court, substituting a little white ball for the prey of flesh and blood.

I'm sure no expert compared to many that post here. For a factory stock it has some pretty grain. In a 243 I see no reason why it would crack. If you would like to swap it out let me know. Wink

243???
Can't really crack a stock, unless it's horribly installed, inletted, loose, and the action blows up from the load.

looks fine to me,

Grain seems to flow through the wrist alright. Does the other poster happen to have x-ray vision or perhaps they're clairvoyant? I doubt you'll ever have a problem with that stock as long as it is bedded properly and the screws not over-tightened.

Reasons for stock cracks-not fully dried before inletting, no clearance behind tang with a high recoil caliber, grain running upward thru the down ward part of the pistol grip, really wild burl grain in pistol grip. Don't see any of these problems here. Nice looking!

Hey Bushcook the stock is beautiful and looks plenty strong. Your other poster is a jealous type who can't find anything good to say about anyone elses good finds or deals. Trust me there are a lot of those types out there nay sayers about everything unless they own it then it's the best ever and your stuff is junk.
Ignore the fool and move on, nice peice of wood!

I think it looks great! I wouldn't worry.

Most people who make those kind of post are jealous or don't know what they are talking about!

Tell your friend, I'll buy him a decent synthetic stock and he can send that piece of junk to me. I'm a real altruist, I just don't want anyone to get hurt.

One of the nice things about the internet is that all one needs to post opinions is a keyboard.....brain is not required.

IMO the .243 will work in that stock very well....

and it appears as though it's the opinion of almost every one here.

For just an ordinary, non-select piece of factory wood he did very well.

I never have luck like that.

I take it your friend is worried about the striping in the butt. That is NOT weak and won't ever crack. That is a very high grade of turkish walnut the number one walnut in the world. Does it look that great on the other side? That dark strip is just the figure your wanting in turkish walnut. Just tell him to not give that another thought. The other poster was either dumb or jealous. FNMauser

Now that's funny, GSP7. rotflmo

That stick of wood is going to take a hell of a lot more recoil than a 243 Win. to make it fail.

if I remember correctly it was a 243.........pretty dang light recoil. Chances of it cracking any stock very slim to none

many factory stocks have the grain flow far from perfect, very few factory stocks crack, even with much larger cals.

So with that said..........whoever told you that may not be very well informed, I'd take what he said with a grain of salt.

its a very nice stock for a factory gun, shot it like you got good sense and tell him to go pack sand.
