I have a 1909 Argentine DWM action and want to put a Shilen barrel on it and chamber it for 35 Whelen.

I was told folks here might tell me where to get this done. I know nothing about it.

Metal work first then the wood later.

Is the action drilled and tapped?...bolt handle altered?...safety altered?...new trigger?

Do you have the barrel yet?...what contour?...

Do you want iron sights installed or bare and do you want it blued or is the barrel stainless?

I suggest the bluing be done after fitting to the stock to allow for scratches that might occurr fitting the barreled action to the stock.

I shot a old 1909 /35 W with Weaver K4 that someone got for cheap.

What a great gun.

I loaded the ammo.

Big power with the good bullets and holes touching on the targets even with 357 mag bullets and 10 gr pistol powder.

The barrel was heavy so the recoil was ok, but carrying a 10 pound rifle all day is not easy.

dog,
The action is untouched and original. Nothing has been done to it. It looks like it was never blued.

The barrel is a number 3 taper Shilen.

I need all the work done you mentioned. Do you do it?

What do you recommend for a trigger and safety and bolt handle?

anyone?

rolltop, it all depends on what you want to spend.

if you want a trigger, safety, bolt handle, and bases, with a barrel install, that should be about 500, total, including parts.

You can save a couple bucks if you like side safeties, or a "buehler" style safety, or even a 2 position.

You should be able to find a local smith who can screw these parts in for you.

No...I'm a hobbyist and do it for myself and a few close friends. I make no business attempt at it.

I might change my mind some day but not for now.

What is your budget?.....this can cost a little to a lot

just a guess here.

install barrel............. $150
Dakota safety ............. $250
bolt handle................. $60
drill and Tap................$40
trigger .....................$60
heat treat(don't ask why)...$100
bottom metal................arm and leg

arm and leg = $75 to $400

There are a number of folks here that can steer you in the right direction...but costs can be high or almost as little as you want.

Those costs don't seem out of line. I know this is not a cheap thing to do and will cost a lot more than just buying a Remington rifle.

In the end I want this thing to work well and look like a fine piece of workmanship. The action was a gift from my grandfathers estate and I want it to get the best of work, well withing reason. I don't think a couple grand spent on the metal is too much. $1500 is about where I expected the metal to come in at. We will worry about the stock later.

I don't know what part of Western Colorado you live in but, Dan Dowling used to be in Palisade and is one of the premier bench gun builders in the country but, he will still do hunting rifles. The last time I talked to him, he was threatening to move back to Missouri and I haven't heard from him in a long time. Call Palisade information for his number.
