Ladies and Gentlemen:

It appears that my new centerfire brass is getting smaller and smaller. I have some new Winchester 8mm Mauser brass that is only a nominal .4625" in diameter at the base.

The problem is my 1898 Mauser extractors will not hold the brass in place on the bolt nose anymore with these newer cases, even up to a nominal .4675". The brass drops off easily. On the other hand, my Lapua brass is running about .471", and works great, but they don't make 8mm Mauser brass.

I need properly headstamped 8x57 brass for an Africa rifle that I am building.

Has anyone done a light TIG weld to build up the edge of the extractor that contacts the brass case's groove? I would like to build it up enough so that I can file/sand it down to get the proper bite on the cartridge.

Also, is there anyone here, who does that kind of work?

Wouldn't it be easier to just replace the extractor. Oops missed the "extractorS" comment. Midway lists a blank one. I have no clue as to the quality.

Graff's has Pri Partisan brass it runs .467 not sure if this helps but it has correct headstamp.

Norma has 8x57 that isn't too hard to come by either.

brownells has long blanded extractors
tig will affect the temper, but that can be redone .. long story short, the new extractor will be less work/money than a welded one .. though obviously it must be done, look at all the same casehead mausers outthere

I want to use the original extractors, and on two, after more checking, my .471" diameter Lapua brass won't stay on the bolt nose either.

I have found that trying to fit after market extractors (and some surplus ones, too) can be a real pain in the neck, so I don't want to go that route.

So, I really want to TIG the ends.

Does anyone do this?

There are ways to extend the reach of the hook, but in answer to your question, yes, they can be TIG'ed, ground and re-hardened. I made a fixture years ago just for this but with the availability of long replacement extractors, I canned the fixture to make shelf space.

You can use a Dremel tool with the 1 in. diameter waffer wheels to remove a few thousands from inside the extractor. You may need to dress down the wheels to fit inside the area needing the small amount removed. Also may need to clear a small amount off to clear the bolt lug. If this is a rifle used for dangerous game have a new extractor fitted. I have had to make this adjustment several times without any problems.
