OK I need a donor action for an 06 based case. I have two 95-98% MKXs 1 in 270 and 1 in 30-06 with the original floor release. The 270 is in a Hogue stock and the 06 is a factory viscount. I had planned on using the 270 as a loaner or maybe a gift for one of the guys in the family. Then caught the 06 at a real good price planning on pulling the action.

So now I really need to choose. I would shoot neither. My go to is my 280PDK if I need bigger then 308Norma, 340PDK, 358 Norma 375 etc/etc. Along with 7mag, stw, 25-06 and other smaller.

So opinions on what would be the keeper/loaner/potential gift and which the donor??

Ramrod, That is a real 50/50 decision.

I would keep the 270 as a loaner based on the fact that recoil would be less than the 06 and therefore suitable for women and others that might be recoil sensitive. This is also based on an ass-umption that since you are based in Big H, most of the use would be in Texas.

The 06 would be the more versitile choice if you envisioned loaning it to some one that might be using it on larger game. Either way it is a real toss up.

Hell, keep the one that shoots best!

It is a coin toss but I'd be tempted keep the .30-06 only because it was original. I would base my decision on which shoots the best.

Use the 270 for a donor. The '06 is more versitle and is still in it's orignial stock.

Then keep the 06 barrel then you can always rechamber it to 308NM later.

use the 270 as the donar.. after all, it's a 270, and i think you are supposed to use them for donars

then you can cut the brass of, and use it for .475 jackets

Doug, Already have a 308 Norma sitting next to it in the safe.

As to the condition let me correct my statement a little. The metal is 95% on the 270 98% on the 06. As to the Viscount stock it has NOOOO grain and while there is not really in major damage it looks like it was hit by the DING fairy. Since both barreled action are the same I would have no issue with a swap. If I were keeping either for myself I have an empty MKX Caviler stock I would use.

As far as accuracy goes I have never had an early MKX that I could not get to shoot sub MOA. I have worked up an accuracy load for a MKX 270 that worked on three different rifles. Now I only need to find where I placed it. As to the 06 I don't even own dies. Smiler

After morning coffee the 270 is leaning towards being the donor, sell the viscoutn stock and use the Hogue on the 06.

I just really hate these 50/50 decisions.

Well decision made. My hunting partner (my wife) made it. My old boss and I were discussing it this afternoon. She walked up and said after seeing the Eland in Africa that there might be a time that she needed something larger than her 7X57. Then asked if either the 270 or 06 would allow her to shoot a heavier bullet if needed. I said the 06 would that the 270 was smaller dia than hers just a little faster. She said keep the 06 if she needed smaller and faster she would grab her 243 or the 25-06.

So another smart decision that I didn't have to make. clap

Now I have some soon to be surplus 270 brass, bullets and dies.
