Im thinkin of making a stock for a old remington 22 target rifle. I've got saws sanders, drillpress and access to 4x6 walnut 10'. I know i will need something for the barrel chanel. Is there any thing else I will need fot this prodject. I imagine I would use mostly hand tools once I get the rough shape cut out. should make a good winter prodject. jeremy

Go to Amazon and buy "Professional Stockmaking" by David Wesbrook:

Wessbrook Book

This will give you both the information and inspiration you need to tackle a project (and possibly an avocation) like this. Consider also looking at buying a well laid out stock blank. Walnut lumber may work, but for the time and energy you'll dedicate to this project should you see it through, you might just as well have an interesting and functional piect of wood to begin with and a nice finished product. Couple hundred bucks will get you into a blank to be proud of. Again, buy the book and ask questions here, there are some fantastic stockers haunting this URL...

jjohnson, as the Westbrook book is not available, take a look at the NRA Gunsmithing Guide, which you can find used on e-bay or Amazon. Good stuff on rifle stock making.
