Guys, Any reason why a really cheap Rem788 in 6mmRem couldn't be rebarreled to 338Federal or 358Win? Cheers... Con

1. You would still have a cheap rifle with limited resale value. 2. I found the 788 to lock up with loads that a 700 could easily take. 3. Replacement triggers are not available. 4. In the US the difference in the value of a 788 and a 700 or equivalent is close enough that you are better off trading for the 700. I don't know what it is like in Oz.

I think the 358 is the perfect use for the 788. Lou **************** NRA Life Benefactor Member

The Remington 788 was/is an inexpensive rifle which almost always shot/shoots way better than one would expect. The biggest problem today is finding magazines but with the .358 Winchester you'll be able to use any of the .308 Win-based magazines so it should not be that difficult. A simple conversion. There are two issues with this. The first is the magazine, the factory indents for the shoulder are to narrow for the 358 to fit into the magazine. So some file work or mill work is needed, before the cartidge will even go into the magazine properly. The second issue is that, Yes the 788 is more touchy with the warmer loads. This is due to the design. Just be carefull with your ammo, and you should have no problem. Do not try to make it into a magnum type reload. If you expand a case head too much then you will crack and rip off the small lip that holds the extractor in place. Then you will really be up a creek James Wisner Custom Metalsmith

Canjar has a limited stock of 788 benchrest triggers. The price is over $300. Timney says that they have a 788 replacement trigger made. I've read the 788 gets stretchy in heavier loads/calibers. I have a .308 that shoots MOU (minute of umbrella). If the rifle is in good shape and accurate as a 6mm, I'd keep it that way.
I've heard Canjar has a long, long wait on shipping these, and they're not really customer friendly as far replying to inquiries, etc. I have a 788 trued action that was a 6mm- starting fresh like that what would anyone chamber it for in a new rifle?

One might consider the 8 X 57 instead if it will fit the magazine.....I doubt the .358 will feed well in the magazine. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."
