Subjective question about actions...

I realize that this question is somewhat subjective and the answer will be based in far more opinion than fact, but here goes... If you were going to have a "classic" .35 Whelen built what action would you build it on? A .270 is easy, you close you eyes, think .270, and a pre-64 M70 comes to mind (at least mine), but in the same proverbial excercise I can't think of the classic action for the .35 Whelen. The one that comes to mind most frequently, but far from every time, is a 1903 Springfield. What would your classic .35 Whelen look like?

Just to make you think,
Bob

Bob,

Mine is on an M98 Mauser action. It looks "right" especially with the aperture rear and post front sights. [Wink]

Mine is on a 1917, looks just right with the 26" barrel and blond stock. However, the action that comes to mind is the 1903 or an 03a3. In fact, I am keeping my eyes open for a good deal on a sporter 03 or 03a3 to have another one built off of for my stepfather. (he gave me his as I love the 1917's, he prefers 03's so I figure if I find one I will have one built for him).

I like the mauser look, but what action available today would be good for this conversion, a turk?

If not a Mauser, then what???

I have one on a Mauser and one on a Springfield. The Whelen is a classic American cartridge and the Springfield is a classic American rifle. I really like the Springfield. [Cool]

There are a few classic cartridge rifles everyone should have. [Smile]

270 Winchester- Definately a pre-64 model 70 Winchester
7X57- Mauser 98. It is permissible to call it a 275 Rigby also. [Big Grin]
30-06- Definately a 1903 Springfield made at the Springfield Armory
35 Whelen- As someone above stated it should be a 1903 Springfield and be patterned after the Griffin & Howe style.

I have one of these done and the other three in transition. It is a great collection. [Wink]

Idared,

That's my dream rifle collection! I'm working on aquiring the actions to have the rifles built. And if I ever decide to quit being a proffessional student and enter the real world someday I might have the money to have the guns built!

.270 - built on a pre-64 M70
7x57 - built on a M98 Mauser or derivative thereof
.30-06 - I'm leaning toward pre-64 M70 with this one too, although the 1903 would be appropriate as well (perhaps more so)
.35 Whelen - I'm leaning toward the 1903 for this one, but obviously haven't made up my mind since I posed the question

The only thing I will add is a Savage 99 in .300 Savage. I'll keep this one original. It'll be a nice rifle for these northeastern woods. The others listed above will cover anything else I have a desire to hunt.

Now that's my idea of a classic rifle collection!

This has been fun and interesting. Keep 'em coming!

Bob

For me a 35 Whelen would be on the Springfield 1903 action.

Funny thing is ...

That is exactly what I am having built.

Double heat treated Springfield 03 with a Lothar Walther barrel in 35 Whelen. Jack is doing the metal work and Chic is going to do the stock work.

There's a really nice G & H Springfield in .30/06 over on Gunsamerica:

Shows the shape of the cheekpiece pretty good and a Leupold 3X in the sidemount. Classic.

I posted a link in my previous post in this thread, Red.

Here's another....

These are both earlier G&H stock versions than the link moleman posted.

With everyone throwing in their classic action/cartridge combinations I thought I'd throw in mine - .222 on a Sako L 41. Just as classic as the Whelan on a Sprinfield '03.

Bobvthunter, I may be biased [Smile] but I think you should start out with a Model 1999 Montana Action. Solid action, modern design and stocks are readily available [Smile] You can check them out by going to www.montanarifleman.com
