What is the difference if any between the model 70 standerd magnum action and the sctions they use for the 70 classic safari (375, 416) length action, besides scope mount holes having a different spacing.

I have a model 70 300 win mag gathering dust and am cosidering a project rifle but i was not sure how big i could go? 375, 458 lott, any suggestions? jj

The M-70 classic can be converted to the .375 H&H length by removing the block in the rear of the magazine and altering the rear ring. Look at one of their 7MM STWs if you can see one.

One may have to do a little more minor surgery but it's very doable.

I always think we need to look at the option of simply trading the gun for what we want before we go to the gunsmith.

I already have a 375 so i was leaning more towards a lott, i would assume if the 375 would work then the lott would be do-able, this is a win 70 laredo (yes its crf). I am leaning towards a building a custom gun though. otherwise i would sell or trade it.

Still is there any difference between the actions?

it should make the Lott as well

personally, I'd trade what you have for a .458 mag and then convert that.

Besides the scope mount holes and the length of the opening in the action, there are a couple of machining steps left out of the standard actions.

The feed rails aren't finished all the way to the rear, there is a small raised rectangle of metal that needs shortened at the rear of the magazine cutout and there needs a small scallop of metal to be removed back there also. A side by side comparison between a standard magnum and an express magnum action makes all this easier to explain.

Any decent gunsmith with both eyes and most of his fingers should be able to handle the conversion. Big Grin

Hey Bud!
You'll need a 416 rem mag box and follower, a good barrel, and keep going. The hoorible thing is I have seen the action work done with a dremell!!!

I have some ideas what you can do "easy" on this, so if you give me a chat on it

I have a 375 H&H and a 416 Rem. Mag. that started out as Model 70 Classic actions that came off of rifles chambered in 270 Win......

To make the conversion work, you need a good riflesmith who knows what he's doing. Cut, paste, and guess won't give you the results you're looking for. You'll need to have the loading ported opened up and the magazine box mortise extended toward the rear of the receiver and the feed ramp altered, plus you'll need a new magazine box, follower, and follower spring of the correct size, a shorter bolt stop of the correct size.

It's a lot of expensive work, and unless you want to make a best-quality project out of it, the cost of which will much greater than trading your current rifle in on a Model 70 that's already in the chambering you want.

I agree with Allen 100%. I've done it, but only because of my left handed handicap and the scarcity of actions that go along with it. Were I right handed, I probably wouldn't bother, and if I did, I'd trust it to very few gunsmiths.

Maybe you guys are on the right track, by suggesting to sell or trade it.

I already have a 458 win mag that shuuts so well i refuse to have it reamed to lott for fear of destroying the accuracy of it.

Anybody out there interested in a win 70 laredo in 300 mag heavy barrel hs precision stock really a great shooter but i have a new 300 wsm and am at a loss for what to do with it. jj
