I just had a P-64 M70 re-blued. The smith removed the barrel from the action, pluged three holes in the side of the action from a side scope mount, bead blasted the receiver and blued it. He also blued the bolt handle and extractor. The action is now "tight", probably because of the re-blue on the extractor and on the inside surfaces of the action. Any recommendations as to how to slick up the action to get that "smooth as silk" cycling of the bolt?? Brett

Elaborate on what your smith did to plug up the sidemount holes.

SCR & GSP, He fabricated taper pins and pressed them in place. I would expect the blueing has some thickness as well as changing the surface roughness. For example where the extractor slides against the action some of the blue has already worn off after several hundred cycles of the bolt. Best regards; Brett

Jeffeosso, what does "flitz" mean? _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

I have personally measured precision ground surfaces before and after bluing and was using a gage block set shadowgraph that shows 50 millionths of an inch to look like 1/8th inch and can assure you that bluing adds absolutely nothing to the thickness of metals. It adds no thickness at all. Further....it has nothing to do with the surface roughness.......the polishing prior to bluing certainly adds to smoothness but the bluing itself adds nothing. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Vapodog, Interesting post, what would you attribute the preceived difference in action smoothness to? Brett

Could the interior end of the filler "pins" not been dressed off flush with the raceway? Not knowing how the tapered pins were "pressed" into place, could the receiver steel around the pins been bulged slightly in the process? Just a thought.

I have looked and felt the area with my finger carefully and cannot detect any kind of "high spot". The bolt does not seem to bind in that area either. So far, no blue has rubbed off in the area of the pins either. Brett

Vapodog: Blueing does in fact impart some roughness to the surface. It is a corrosive process in itself and leaves the surface a bit rougher than before. It wil smooth out after cycling a bunch of times. Jim Kobe 10841 Oxborough Ave So Bloomington MN 55437 952.884.6031 Professional member American Custom Gunmakers Guild

Jim....I've also measured blued parts with a profilometer before and after bluing.....and found no differences. I trust your judgment and will grant that you're right on this.....but the difference does not show up in thickness even to millionths of an inch or under scrutiny of a profilometer (which also measures to millionths of an inch. What's going on?....not sure but I can assure you that it's not detectible to instruments measuring to extremely fine increments. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Maybe could have been "bead/powder" blasting took the slick out of the rails? Think id try putting strips of some duct tape on the rails, etc before blasting.
