First let me say, I’m not trying to take business away from the guys who are busting their ass making a living as gunsmiths; I’m not looking for any trade secrets; I have no special tools.

I have a Mark X Whitworth, 375 H&H that I bought at a general store for what I thought would be a “one time†use (got drawn for a bison hunt) but I have fallen in love with the gun & caliber.

It is plenty accurate with anything I load, wondering if there is anything I can do at home to make the action smother.

Is polishing the bolt something I can do or should I take it to a gunsmith?

Work the bolt a couple thousand times. Speed it up with a little polishing compound. I sit and do mine watching TV

As usual just my $.02

Oh there is definitely an end. I just try and remember most of my own screw ups and try not to repeat them. YOu are not paying attention if you don't see me asking for advice.

I use simple valve lapping compound picked up from the auto parts store. I'm not sure of the grit. I also have Wheelers 600grit. I have not used it much.

Remember a little goes a VERY long way if you get it on the back of the lugs. Along the slide rails and the cocking piece will smooth it up quickly.

Anything else I should do beyond polishing the action?

You probably can't do this at home but the addition of a three position safety is a real positive addition to the MarkX....I heartily recommend it.

The bases were not a very close fit on top of my Mark X, so I epoxy bedded them to match the receiver. Used my Dremel to cut some grooves in the bottom of each mount to hold the epoxy.

I would strongly recommend this on such a heavy kicker as yours (mine's only a 243). Your scope mounts will stay tight longer and can't rock or otherwise shift around.
