WSM bolt thrust and mauser actions

Ladies and Gentlemen:

I am interested in building a wildcat, using the 300 WSM case in a 1908 DWM Brazilian Mauser. In your experience, has anyone had trouble with lug set back when building WSM's on Mauser actions, or other bolt actions for that matter?

Based on my rough calculations, I see an approximately 36 to 37% increase in bolt thrust with the WSM's over a .470/.473 (30-06) based case body diameter. My calculations are based on the internal surface area of the inside of base of the case, using the external body diameter as a rough approximation of internal diameter, not the case head/rim diameter.

I was wondering if this calculated increase of blot thrust showed up in increased plastic deformation in your Mauser or other bolt actions?

Sincerely,

Chris Bemis

if you are planning on running a WSM case at WSM pressure, please choose another action... the 1908 and 1909s are both of the fews candidates, IMHO, that should be considered for reheat.

btw, you would be MILES ahead in feeding and cost if you piced up a winnie super shadow already in a wsm and rebarreled it.

as far as I know, everything from 458 down to 17 has been done on the WSM case, and there's even a .500 bullet on them (not mine) using the case mouth to headspace... just like a giant 45 ACP

I have doubts that you can find a competent gunsmith who would barrel one of the Mauser actions you mentioned in a WSM, for the reasons mentioned by Jeffeso, and you would have feeding issues too.

The WSM is not a good choice for any Mauser in my opinion. You'll have nothing but problems, and will be wasting your money and will regret it. There are much better choices, and choosing a rifle factory made in that chambering is the best bet.
